  5. Kitchen Remodel Cost

A kitchen remodel in Houston costs $7,592 to $26,089 for a typical project according to Thumbtack (July 2026), with a full range of $3,107 to $59,134. A complete midrange remodel runs about $28,300 for a minor update and $81,521 for a major one, and an upscale major remodel averages $157,727, according to the 2025 Cost vs Value Report for Houston (Zonda / JLC).

Those numbers are wide on purpose. “Kitchen remodel” covers everything from painting the cabinets in a Spring Branch ranch house to gutting a River Oaks kitchen down to the studs. This guide breaks the Houston market ranges down by kitchen size, finish tier, neighborhood and line item, then covers the Houston-specific things that move the price: slab foundations, wall removal, City of Houston permits, humidity and cabinet choice.

Every figure below is a published market range from a named source, not a Kitchen Remodel Masters quote. KRM does not publish a price list because no two kitchens get the same scope. The only way to get a real number for your kitchen is the free in-home consultation and 3D design described at the end of this page.

Average Kitchen Remodel Cost in Houston by Size and Tier

Size and finish level explain most of the spread. National cost guides price kitchen remodels at $75 to $250 per square foot, with high-end kitchens reaching $600 per square foot (HomeAdvisor, June 2026; Bob Vila, January 2026). Houston labor and material costs sit close to the national average, and Block Renovation’s permit data put the average Houston kitchen project at $36,841 against a $46,623 national average (January 2026).

The table below applies those per-square-foot tiers to the three kitchen sizes common in Houston homes. A refresh keeps the layout and the cabinet boxes. A mid-range remodel replaces cabinets, counters, flooring and appliances in the same footprint. A high-end remodel means custom cabinets, natural stone, a pro appliance package and usually a layout change.

Kitchen size Refresh ($75 to $100/sq ft) Mid-range ($150 to $250/sq ft) High-end ($250 to $600/sq ft)
Small (75 to 100 sq ft, most 10x10 kitchens) $5,600 to $10,000 $11,250 to $25,000 $25,000 to $60,000+
Medium (150 to 180 sq ft) $11,250 to $18,000 $22,500 to $45,000 $45,000 to $108,000
Large (200 to 250 sq ft) $15,000 to $25,000 $30,000 to $62,500 $62,500 to $150,000+

Sources for the table: HomeAdvisor’s size-based ranges (75 sq ft $5,600 to $17,500; 100 sq ft $7,500 to $25,000; 150 sq ft $11,250 to $37,500; 200 sq ft $15,000 to $50,000, June 2026), Bob Vila’s small/medium/large tiers (January 2026) and Fixr’s 10x10 ranges (February 2025). The Cost vs Value report’s $157,727 Houston figure for an upscale major remodel assumes a 200 square foot kitchen with custom cherry cabinets, stone counters and commercial-grade appliances, which is why the large high-end cell goes past $150,000.

Two quick reads from the table. First, a small kitchen does not cost a small amount per square foot. Fixed costs like the sink, faucet, range hood, electrical work and dumpster are the same whether the kitchen is 80 or 180 square feet. Second, the jump from mid-range to high-end is almost entirely cabinets and countertops, which is covered in the line-item section below.

Kitchen Remodel Cost by Houston Neighborhood

The same scope costs different amounts across the Houston area because the houses are different. Inner Loop luxury kitchens are larger and specified higher. Heights and Montrose bungalows are small but old. Suburban kitchens are big, newer and usually sit on a slab. The table uses published Houston ranges from local contractors who list their prices plus the Cost vs Value Houston data.

Area Typical full-remodel range Why
Inner Loop luxury: River Oaks, Memorial, West University, Tanglewood $81,500 to $157,700 (Cost vs Value Houston 2025, midrange major to upscale major); Houzz 2026 puts the median major remodel in kitchens over 250 sq ft at $75,000 Larger kitchens, custom cabinets, slab stone, pro appliance packages, and home values that support the spend
Heights, Montrose, Bellaire bungalows (1920s to 1960s) $40,000 to $65,000 for a full renovation (Houston Builder Pro, 2025) Small footprints, but old wiring and galvanized plumbing get replaced, pier-and-beam floors need leveling, and most projects open a wall to the dining room
Suburbs: Katy, Sugar Land, Spring, Cypress Katy $30,000 to $55,000; Sugar Land $45,000 to $80,000 (Houston Builder Pro, 2025); Houston Kitchen Rehab (September 2025) lists a mid-range remodel at $30,000 to $55,000 Bigger 1990s and 2000s kitchens with honey-oak cabinets. Many only need refinishing and new counters, but island plumbing on a slab adds cost
The Woodlands $65,000 to $100,000+ for a luxury kitchen (Houston Builder Pro, 2025) Large kitchens in newer homes, higher-end finishes expected at resale

The neighborhood matters less than what is behind the walls. A 1950s Bellaire kitchen with original wiring costs more to remodel than a 2005 Sugar Land kitchen twice its size, because the electrical has to be brought to code before the cabinets go in. See the location pages for Bellaire, The Heights, River Oaks and Sugar Land for what each area usually involves.

Kitchen Remodel Cost Breakdown by Line Item

Here is where the money goes in a full Houston kitchen remodel. Percentages are from HomeAdvisor (June 2026) and Bob Vila (January 2026); dollar ranges are national market figures from the same guides.

Line item Share of budget Typical range
Cabinets and hardware 30% to 40% Stock $100 to $300 per linear foot; custom $500 to $1,200+ per linear foot installed (HomeAdvisor)
Countertops about 14% $1,870 to $4,400 installed for a standard kitchen; granite $80 to $150, quartz $50 to $200, quartzite $80 to $220 per sq ft installed (HomeAdvisor)
Labor 25% to 50% HomeAdvisor counts labor at about 25%; Bob Vila counts it at 50% to 60% when trade labor inside each line is included
Plumbing and electrical 5% to 11% $1,000 to $4,000 in the same layout (Bob Vila); panel upgrade $520 to $2,000; gas line move $375 to $750 (HomeAdvisor)
Flooring up to 18% $1,000 to $4,000 installed (HomeAdvisor); luxury vinyl plank $3 to $7 per sq ft, tile $4 to $40 per sq ft
Appliances about 6% $2,500 to $15,000 for a major replacement package; $25,000+ for pro-grade (Bob Vila)
Backsplash and lighting 5% to 9% Backsplash $500 to $1,700; lighting $500 to $2,000 (HomeAdvisor)
Permits 1% to 3% $450 to $2,500 (Bob Vila); City of Houston adds a $33.56 admin fee on top of the fee-schedule amount
Contingency 5% to 10% Set aside for what the walls hide, especially in pre-1970 homes

Cabinets are the line to watch. On a $50,000 Houston kitchen, $15,000 to $20,000 is cabinets. That is why the first question Sean asks at a consultation is whether the existing boxes are solid. If they are, cabinet refinishing or refacing can cut the biggest line item by more than half, and the budget moves to counters and appliances instead.

What Moves Kitchen Remodel Cost in Houston

National cost guides miss five things that are specific to Houston houses. These are the items that separate a $30,000 quote from a $55,000 quote for the same kitchen.

Slab foundation plumbing

Most Houston homes built after about 1960 sit on a slab-on-grade foundation. That is fine until you want a sink, dishwasher or ice maker somewhere it has never been. Moving a drain on a slab means saw-cutting the concrete, trenching to the existing line, setting the new drain and re-pouring. Relocating a sink costs $1,000 to $4,000 according to Fixr (February 2025), and slab work lands at the top of that range. An island sink is the most common request that triggers it. Keeping the sink on the same wall and putting a prep sink or nothing in the island is the single biggest money-saver in a suburban Houston remodel.

Wall removal and the engineer’s letter

Opening the kitchen to the living room is the most requested layout change in Heights, Montrose and Bellaire bungalows and in 1980s Memorial and Spring Branch homes. If the wall is load-bearing, a beam has to carry the roof or second floor, and the City of Houston wants a structural engineer’s drawing with the permit. Removing a load-bearing wall runs $1,400 to $11,500 according to Bob Vila (January 2026), depending on span and whether ducts, plumbing or wiring run through it. KRM handles the engineering and the permit as part of the job; the kitchen wall removal project in Houston shows what a bearing-wall removal looks like from demo to the finished opening.

City of Houston permits

Cosmetic work does not need a permit: new cabinets, countertops, backsplash, flooring and paint in the same layout. Plumbing work beyond swapping a faucet, disposal or valve, all electrical work, gas lines and any structural change do. The City of Houston residential remodel permit carries a $33.56 administrative fee plus the fee-schedule amount, needs plan review and inspection, and takes 1 to 15 business days to process. Inspections add stops to the schedule: rough plumbing and electrical get inspected before the drywall closes, so a permitted kitchen takes longer than a cosmetic one even when the crew is the same.

Humidity-rated materials

Houston averages above 70% relative humidity. Solid wood doors move with the seasons, MDF swells if it gets wet at the sink base, and paint on cabinets takes longer to cure than it does in Dallas or Austin. Plywood boxes, a conversion-varnish or catalyzed finish instead of latex paint, and a sealed sink base cost a little more up front and are the difference between cabinets that look right in year eight and doors that stick every August. Outdoor and covered-patio kitchens have their own rule: standard quartz yellows in Houston sun, so granite, porcelain or quartzite goes outside.

Custom vs stock cabinets

Stock cabinets come in 3-inch width increments, so a wall that does not divide evenly gets filler strips. Custom cabinets are built to the wall. The price gap is real: $100 to $300 per linear foot for stock against $500 to $1,200 or more for custom (HomeAdvisor, June 2026). KRM builds custom cabinets in its own Houston shop, which removes the separate cabinet lead time and lets the boxes be sized to old, out-of-square bungalow walls where stock boxes leave gaps. Semi-custom sits between the two and covers most mid-range kitchens.

Is $30,000 Enough for a Kitchen Remodel in Houston?

Yes, for a minor remodel in the same layout. The 2025 Cost vs Value Report prices a midrange minor kitchen remodel in Houston at $28,300. That scope is a 200 square foot kitchen with new shaker-style doors and drawer fronts on the existing boxes, new hardware, a new laminate countertop, a new mid-priced sink and faucet, energy-efficient range and refrigerator, new resilient flooring and fresh paint. Swap the laminate for quartz and the number lands right at $30,000 to $35,000.

It is not enough for a gut remodel. New cabinets, stone counters, a full appliance package and a layout change start near $81,521 in Houston per the same report. If the budget is fixed at $30,000 and the cabinets are solid, the money goes furthest on refinishing or refacing the boxes, new counters and a new backsplash, which is the version of the project that recouped 106.1% at resale in Houston.

10x10 Kitchen Remodel Cost in Houston

A 10x10 kitchen is the industry’s standard small kitchen: 100 square feet, about 20 linear feet of cabinets and roughly 30 square feet of countertop. A 10x10 remodel costs $10,000 to $25,000 for most homeowners with an average near $15,000, according to Fixr (February 2025). Block Renovation (January 2025) puts a basic 10x10 at $10,000 to $15,000, mid-range at $15,000 to $30,000 and high-end at $30,000 to $60,000 or more. Most Heights and Montrose bungalow kitchens are 10x10 or smaller, which is why the number comes up so often in Houston. The full math on cabinets, counters and layouts is on the 10x10 kitchen remodel cost in Houston page.

What a Houston Kitchen Remodel Quote Usually Includes

A written proposal should list these by name so two quotes can be compared line by line:

  • Demo and haul-off, with floor and doorway protection
  • Cabinets, with the box material, door style and finish spelled out
  • Countertops by material, color and edge, with the slab square footage
  • Sink, faucet, disposal and the plumbing labor to set them
  • Electrical: outlets to code, under-cabinet lighting, any panel work
  • Backsplash tile and installation
  • Flooring, or a note that the existing floor stays
  • Paint
  • Permits and inspections, if the scope needs them
  • Daily cleanup and a final walkthrough

Appliances are usually excluded unless the proposal says otherwise, and so are repairs to what demo uncovers, which is what the contingency is for. The what comes first in a kitchen remodel guide walks through the order of work so the schedule on the proposal makes sense.

Financing a Kitchen Remodel in Houston

Kitchen Remodel Masters offers financing through Synchrony, arranged at the proposal stage before anything is ordered. Spreading a $30,000 minor remodel or a $60,000 mid-range remodel over monthly payments is the most common way Houston homeowners fund the project without a home equity loan. Terms and approval depend on the application; the financing page has the details and the application link. If the kitchen is a pre-sale project, the average ROI of a kitchen remodel in Houston page covers which scopes return the most at resale.

How to Get an Exact Kitchen Remodel Price in Houston

Market ranges tell you the neighborhood of the number. The exact number depends on your cabinets, your foundation, your walls and the materials you pick. Sean Carmel visits the home, measures the kitchen, checks the cabinet boxes and the foundation type and tells you what is realistic for the scope you want. Then KRM builds a free 3D design with the layout, cabinet style, countertop and finishes so the written proposal prices real selections, not allowances. The 6-step process page shows what happens after that.

The consultation and the 3D design are free with no obligation. Call (713) 364-6603 or request a consultation and bring your kitchen dimensions, a few photos and your budget range. Sean will tell you which of the tiers above fits and what it would take to get there.
