- Kitchen Remodel Cost by Size
A kitchen remodel costs $75 to $250 per square foot for most Houston projects, with high-end kitchens reaching $600 per square foot, according to HomeAdvisor (June 2026), Fixr (2026) and Bob Vila (January 2026). Fixr lists the national average at $150 per square foot, and Houston labor and material prices track close to the national average, so a 150 square foot Houston kitchen lands at $11,250 to $37,500 for a standard remodel.
The per-square-foot rate is the fastest way to size a budget and the number most likely to mislead, because a kitchen is not priced by its floor. Cabinets are priced by the linear foot, countertops by the square foot of slab, and plumbing, electrical and permits as fixed items that cost about the same in a small kitchen as in a large one. This guide explains the rates by tier, runs the arithmetic for 80 to 250 square foot kitchens, and covers the Houston details that push a real quote off the per-foot line.
Every figure is a published market range from a named source, not a Kitchen Remodel Masters price. KRM does not publish a price list. The wider picture, by neighborhood and line item, is on the kitchen remodel cost in Houston page; this page goes deeper on size.
Kitchen Remodel Cost Per Square Foot by Tier
The $75 to $600 spread covers three different projects. The table below is the same tier split used across this site, built from HomeAdvisor’s $75 to $250 range (June 2026), Fixr’s $150 average and $600 high-end ceiling (2026) and Bob Vila’s small, medium and large tiers (January 2026).
| Tier | Cost per square foot | What it includes |
|---|---|---|
| Refresh | $75 to $100 | Same layout, same cabinet boxes. New doors or a painted finish, hardware, a new countertop, sink and faucet, paint and flooring |
| Mid-range | $150 to $250 | Same footprint. New semi-custom or custom cabinets, quartz or granite counters, tile backsplash, flooring, lighting, mid-priced appliances |
| High-end | $250 to $600 | Custom cabinets, natural stone, a pro appliance package, and usually a layout change with plumbing, electrical and structural work |
The gap between $100 and $150 is not a typo. Few kitchens land there, because the step from keeping the cabinet boxes to replacing them adds the largest line item in the budget: cabinets take 30% to 40% of a kitchen remodel according to HomeAdvisor and Bob Vila.
Line by line: a refresh keeps the layout and the boxes, and refinishing, refacing or painting the cabinets is what keeps it at $75 to $100. Mid-range is the typical Houston kitchen: Block Renovation’s permit data put the average Houston project at $36,841 (January 2026), which on the 160 to 180 square foot kitchen Fixr calls the U.S. average is $205 to $230 per square foot. High-end is driven by cabinets, stone and layout. The Cost vs Value upscale major remodel for Houston is $157,727 for a 200 square foot kitchen, or $789 per square foot, above Bob Vila’s $600 ceiling because it includes a commercial-grade appliance package. The luxury kitchen remodel in Houston page lists what goes into that tier.
Why Small Kitchens Cost More Per Square Foot
Fixed costs do not shrink with the room. Angi (2026) states it plainly: smaller kitchens cost more per square foot because fixed expenses like labor and design fees are spread over less area. The sink, faucet and disposal, the range hood and its vent run, electrical work to bring outlets to code, permit fees, demo labor, the dumpster and project management cost about the same in an 80 square foot kitchen as in a 200 square foot one.
Divide $6,000 of fixed items by 80 square feet and it adds $75 per square foot before a single cabinet is bought; divide it by 200 square feet and it adds $30. That is why a Heights bungalow kitchen often reads higher per foot than a Memorial ranch kitchen with the same cabinet and countertop spec. The small kitchen remodel in Houston page covers how to spend that fixed money well.
Kitchen Remodel Cost by Kitchen Size in Houston
The table applies the three tier rates to five kitchen sizes common in Houston homes. The totals are arithmetic on the sourced per-square-foot ranges above, not quotes. The sizes map to Houston housing stock: 80 to 110 square feet in Heights and Montrose bungalows, 150 to 200 in Memorial and Spring Branch ranch houses, 250 and up in River Oaks and West University.
| Kitchen size | Refresh ($75 to $100/sq ft) | Mid-range ($150 to $250/sq ft) | High-end ($250 to $600/sq ft) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 80 sq ft (8x10 galley or bungalow) | $6,000 to $8,000 | $12,000 to $20,000 | $20,000 to $48,000 |
| 120 sq ft (10x12 L-shape) | $9,000 to $12,000 | $18,000 to $30,000 | $30,000 to $72,000 |
| 160 sq ft (U-shape or L with small island) | $12,000 to $16,000 | $24,000 to $40,000 | $40,000 to $96,000 |
| 200 sq ft (three walls plus island) | $15,000 to $20,000 | $30,000 to $50,000 | $50,000 to $120,000 |
| 250 sq ft (open plan with large island) | $18,750 to $25,000 | $37,500 to $62,500 | $62,500 to $150,000+ |
Cross-check: HomeAdvisor (June 2026) and Angi (2026) list 75 square feet at $5,600 to $17,500, 100 at $7,500 to $25,000, 150 at $11,250 to $37,500 and 200 at $15,000 to $50,000, which bracket the refresh and mid-range columns. Fixr’s 10x10 range of $10,000 to $25,000 (February 2025) sits between the 80 and 120 square foot rows.
80 to 110 square feet: Heights, Montrose and Oak Forest bungalows
Original kitchens in 1920s to 1960s bungalows are 80 to 110 square feet, often a galley or an L on two walls. The per-foot rate reads high here because of the fixed items above and because old houses add work: old wiring and galvanized supply lines get replaced and pier-and-beam floors get leveled before cabinets go in. Houston Builder Pro (2025) lists a full bungalow renovation at $40,000 to $65,000, which on a 100 square foot kitchen is $400 to $650 per square foot. The scope, not the finish level, puts it there. The 10x10 kitchen remodel cost in Houston page does the cabinet and countertop math for this size, and the Heights location page lists what those projects involve.
150 to 200 square feet: Memorial and Spring Branch ranch kitchens
Ranch houses from the 1960s to 1980s in Memorial, the Memorial Villages and Spring Branch have 150 to 200 square foot kitchens, usually a U-shape closed off from the den. The per-foot rate sits near the national average because the fixed items spread over more floor. What pushes the quote up is the layout change most owners want: opening the wall to the den and adding an island, which on a slab means a plumbing permit and slab work if the island gets a sink. See the Memorial and Memorial Villages page.
250 square feet and up: River Oaks and West University
Kitchens in River Oaks, West University and Tanglewood run 250 square feet and more, open to the family room with a large island. The per-foot rate here is set by the spec, not the size: 40 or more linear feet of custom cabinets, 80 to 100 square feet of quartzite or marble and a pro appliance package put most of these kitchens in the high-end column. Houzz’s 2026 trends study puts the median major remodel in kitchens over 250 square feet at $75,000, and the Cost vs Value upscale figure for Houston is $157,727. See the River Oaks page.
Linear Feet of Cabinets vs Square Feet of Floor
Cabinets are priced per linear foot, and linear feet depend on the layout, not the floor area. A 10x10 kitchen has about 20 linear feet of cabinets according to Fixr (February 2025). A 200 square foot kitchen with cabinets on three walls and an island can have 30 to 40; the same 200 square feet with a big window wall and a breakfast table may have 24.
The rates: stock cabinets $100 to $300 per linear foot and custom $500 to $1,200 or more installed (HomeAdvisor, June 2026). Twenty linear feet of custom cabinets is $10,000 to $24,000; forty is $20,000 to $48,000. That one line moves a kitchen between tiers on its own, which is why a per-square-foot rate cannot predict it. The custom cabinets cost in Houston page has the per-foot breakdown. KRM builds its cabinets in its own Houston shop, so the cabinet line in a KRM proposal is measured from your walls, not a stock catalog.
Countertop Square Footage vs Floor Square Footage
Countertops are the second place floor area misleads. Stone is priced per square foot of slab installed: granite $80 to $150, quartz $50 to $200, quartzite $80 to $220 (HomeAdvisor, June 2026). The square footage that matters is the top of the base cabinets plus the island, not the floor.
Rule of thumb: each linear foot of base cabinet carries roughly 2 square feet of countertop at a standard 25.5 inch depth, before cutouts. A 10x10 kitchen needs about 30 square feet (Fixr, February 2025). A 200 square foot kitchen with 35 linear feet of base cabinet and a 4 by 8 foot island needs 60 to 80 square feet. At quartzite rates that is $4,800 to $17,600 against $2,400 to $6,600 for the 10x10. Island size is the swing factor: a 4 by 8 foot island alone is 32 square feet of slab, more than a whole 10x10 kitchen’s counter. The countertop replacement cost in Houston page covers each stone.
How Houston Contractors Actually Quote a Kitchen
Most Houston remodelers do not quote by the square foot. A written proposal is built by scope: cabinets by linear foot with box material and door style, countertops by slab square footage and edge, then fixed lines for demo and haul-off, plumbing, electrical, backsplash, flooring, paint, and permits if the scope needs them. Appliances are usually excluded unless listed.
Two kitchens with the same floor area can get quotes $30,000 apart because one has 22 linear feet of refaced cabinets and the other has 38 linear feet of custom boxes and a plumbed island. The per-square-foot rate checks whether a budget and a wish list are in the same neighborhood; the proposal is the real number. At Kitchen Remodel Masters that proposal follows a free in-home consultation and free 3D design, and most kitchens then take 2 to 4 weeks on site.
Houston Costs That Break the Per-Square-Foot Math
Two Houston-specific items cost the same in a small kitchen as in a large one and land outside any per-foot rate. (Load-bearing wall removal is a third; the kitchen remodel cost in Houston page covers it.)
Slab foundation and island plumbing
Most Houston homes built after about 1960 sit on a slab-on-grade foundation. A sink in a new spot means saw-cutting the concrete, trenching to the existing drain and re-pouring. Relocating a sink runs $1,000 to $4,000 according to Fixr (February 2025), and slab work sits at the top of the range. Keeping the sink on its wall and putting a prep sink or nothing in the island is the biggest single saver on a suburban Houston remodel.
City of Houston permits
Cosmetic work in the same layout needs no permit. Plumbing beyond a faucet or valve swap, any electrical work, gas lines and structural changes do. Under the 2026 fee schedule every City of Houston permit carries a $33.56 administrative fee, the minimum building or electrical permit fee is $91.06, the minimum plumbing fee is $97.56, and plan review adds 25% of the building permit fee. The building permit is figured from the square footage of the work area, so it is the one line that scales with size, by a few dollars: the worked example on the kitchen remodel permits in Houston page puts it near $143 for a 200 square foot kitchen. Processing takes 1 to 15 business days after plan review per the Houston Permitting Center, and rough plumbing and electrical inspections happen before drywall closes, whatever the kitchen size.
When a Per-Square-Foot Number Misleads
Use the per-foot rate for a first budget check and nothing more. It gives a wrong answer when:
- The kitchen is under 100 square feet: fixed items push the real rate above the published range.
- The layout changes: wall removal, island plumbing and new circuits do not scale per foot.
- The house is pre-1970: wiring, supply lines and floor leveling are priced by the house, not the kitchen.
- The island is large: slab square footage can double with no change in floor area.
- Appliances are in or out: a pro package adds $25,000 or more (Bob Vila) and is usually excluded.
The remodeling cost calculator on this site runs the per-foot math as a starting point, a range to plan around until a scoped proposal replaces it.
How to Get an Exact Number
The tables tell you which tier your budget sits in. The exact number comes from your cabinets, your foundation, your walls and the materials you choose. Sean Carmel visits the home, measures the kitchen, checks the cabinet boxes and the foundation type, and says what is realistic for the scope you want. KRM then builds a free 3D design, and the written proposal prices those real selections. Call (713) 364-6603 or request a consultation with your kitchen dimensions, a few photos and your budget range.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a kitchen remodel cost per square foot in Houston?
A kitchen remodel costs $75 to $250 per square foot for most projects, with high-end kitchens reaching $600 per square foot, according to HomeAdvisor (June 2026), Fixr (2026) and Bob Vila (January 2026). Fixr puts the national average at $150 per square foot. Houston labor and material prices sit close to the national average, so those rates apply to Houston kitchens.
How much does it cost to remodel a 150 square foot kitchen in Houston?
A 150 square foot kitchen costs $11,250 to $37,500 to remodel at the $75 to $250 per square foot rates published by HomeAdvisor and Angi (2026). A refresh at $75 to $100 per square foot is $11,250 to $15,000, a mid-range remodel at $150 to $250 is $22,500 to $37,500, and a high-end remodel at $250 to $600 is $37,500 to $90,000. Those totals are arithmetic on the published rates, not a contractor quote.
Why do small kitchens cost more per square foot to remodel?
Fixed costs do not shrink with the room. The sink, faucet, disposal, range hood, electrical work, permit, dumpster and the labor to set it all cost about the same in an 80 square foot kitchen as in a 200 square foot kitchen. Angi (2026) notes that smaller kitchens cost more per square foot because those fixed expenses are spread over less area. A Heights bungalow kitchen at $200 per square foot and a Memorial kitchen at $140 per square foot can have the same scope.
What is a refresh, mid-range and high-end kitchen remodel per square foot?
A refresh at $75 to $100 per square foot keeps the layout and cabinet boxes and replaces fronts, hardware, counters, sink, faucet, paint and flooring. A mid-range remodel at $150 to $250 per square foot replaces cabinets, counters, flooring, lighting and appliances in the same footprint. A high-end remodel at $250 to $600 per square foot means custom cabinets, natural stone, a pro appliance package and usually a layout change (HomeAdvisor, June 2026; Bob Vila, January 2026).
How many linear feet of cabinets does a kitchen have per square foot of floor?
There is no fixed ratio, which is why floor square footage is a rough guide. A 10x10 kitchen (100 square feet) has about 20 linear feet of cabinets according to Fixr (February 2025). A 200 square foot kitchen with cabinets on three walls and an island often has 30 to 40 linear feet. Cabinets are priced per linear foot, so two kitchens with the same floor area can have very different cabinet bills.
How many square feet of countertop does a kitchen need?
About 30 square feet for a 10x10 kitchen, according to Fixr (February 2025). Each linear foot of base cabinet carries roughly 2 square feet of countertop at a standard 25.5 inch depth, before range and sink cutouts. A 200 square foot kitchen with 35 linear feet of base cabinet and an island usually needs 60 to 80 square feet of slab. Countertop square footage, not floor square footage, drives the stone price.
Do Houston contractors quote kitchen remodels by the square foot?
Most do not. A Houston kitchen quote is built by scope: linear feet of cabinets at a per-foot price, countertop square footage at a per-foot price, then fixed line items for demo, plumbing, electrical, flooring, backsplash, paint and permits. The per-square-foot number is useful for a first budget check, and that is all. Kitchen Remodel Masters does not publish a price list; the written proposal comes after a free in-home consultation and 3D design.
How much does an island sink add to a Houston kitchen remodel?
Relocating a sink costs $1,000 to $4,000 according to Fixr (February 2025), and slab work sits at the top of that range. Most Houston homes built after about 1960 sit on a slab-on-grade foundation, so an island drain means saw-cutting the slab, trenching and re-pouring, plus a City of Houston plumbing permit with a $97.56 minimum fee. That cost is the same whether the kitchen is 120 or 250 square feet, which is why it breaks the per-square-foot math.
Does a kitchen remodel permit in Houston cost more for a bigger kitchen?
Slightly. The City of Houston residential building permit is figured from the square footage of the work area, so a 250 square foot kitchen pays a few dollars more than a 100 square foot kitchen. Every permit also carries a $33.56 administrative fee, a $91.06 minimum building or electrical fee and a $97.56 minimum plumbing fee under the 2026 fee schedule, and plan review adds 25% of the building permit fee. Cosmetic work in the same layout needs no permit at all.
Is $150 per square foot a good budget for a Houston kitchen remodel?
Yes, for a mid-range remodel in the same layout. Fixr (2026) lists $150 per square foot as the national average, and Block Renovation's permit data put the average Houston kitchen project at $36,841 (January 2026), which is about $150 to $230 per square foot for a typical 160 to 240 square foot kitchen. It will not cover custom cabinets, natural stone and a layout change, which start at $250 per square foot.
