Paint or reface cabinets? In Houston, painting a full kitchen runs about $3,500 to $8,000 (Fresh Coat Painters of West Houston, 2026), refacing runs $3,579 to $8,998 with a $6,080 average (Angi, 2026), and replacing cabinets runs $15,000 to $35,000 (Fresh Coat, 2026). Staining sits between painting and refacing at $2,100 to $7,400 (Angi Houston, 2026).

The right answer is set by the cabinet boxes, not the doors. If the boxes are solid and the layout works, you have four options. If the boxes are water damaged or the layout is changing, you have one. This guide compares the four, then gives you a checklist to decide.

Paint vs Stain vs Reface vs Replace: Houston Cost Comparison

Option Houston cost range Lifespan Time Best when Not when
Paint $200 to $3,400 light refresh (Angi Houston, 2026); $3,500 to $8,000 sprayed full kitchen (Fresh Coat West Houston, 2026) Until the next color; a sprayed catalyzed finish is the longest lasting Under a week Boxes and doors are sound, you want a new color Doors are warped, thermofoil is peeling, boxes are swollen
Stain (refinish) $2,100 to $7,400 (Angi Houston, 2026); $1,800 to $4,200 nationally (HomeAdvisor, 2026) Same as paint About a week Solid wood doors, you want the grain to show in a new tone Doors are MDF, laminate or thermofoil, which cannot take stain
Reface $3,579 to $8,998, average $6,080 (Angi Houston, 2026); $5,890 Houston average (Bob Vila, 2024) 10 to 20 years (Fixr, 2026) 3 to 5 days of work (Fixr, 2026) Boxes are sound, door style is dated or doors are damaged Boxes are particleboard with water damage, or you want a new layout
Replace $15,000 to $35,000 (Fresh Coat West Houston, 2026); custom $500 to $1,200 per linear foot (HomeAdvisor, 2026) Decades for plywood boxes 2 to 4 weeks of construction Boxes are damaged, layout is changing, ceilings are tall, you want drawers and pull-outs Boxes are solid and the layout already works

Nationally, Bob Vila lists refacing at $210 to $750 per linear foot and replacement at $400 to $3,500 per linear foot, and says refacing averages 30 to 50 percent less than replacing (bobvila.com, 2024). HomeAdvisor says the same 30 to 50 percent (homeadvisor.com, 2026).

Painting Kitchen Cabinets

Painting keeps everything you have and changes the color. The doors come off, go to a shop, get degreased, sanded, primed and sprayed on both sides. The boxes are masked and sprayed in place. The result on a sound set of cabinets is close to a new factory finish, for a fraction of the price of new cabinets.

What it costs: Angi’s Houston data puts painting at $200 to $3,400 for a light to full refresh (angi.com, 2026). A sprayed full kitchen from a Houston painter runs $3,500 to $8,000 (freshcoatpainters.com, 2026). Fixr’s national average is $4,000 (fixr.com, 2026). The spread is prep: degreasing, grain filling on oak, repairs and a shop-sprayed finish sit at the top; a brush-and-roll refresh sits at the bottom. The cost to paint kitchen cabinets in Houston page has the per-door and per-foot math.

Paint when: the boxes are solid wood or plywood, the doors close square, the layout works, and the look you want is a color change. Honey oak to white, dark cherry to greige, or a two-tone island.

Do not paint when: thermofoil is peeling at the edges, doors have warped in the humidity, or the boxes under the sink or at the toe kick have swelled. Paint will not fix any of those, and it will fail where they are.

Staining Kitchen Cabinets

Staining is refinishing with the grain showing. The old finish is stripped or sanded to bare wood, a new stain goes on, and a clear topcoat seals it. It is the right move when you like wood but not the tone you have: orange 1990s oak to a medium brown, or red cherry to a cooler walnut tone.

What it costs: Angi’s Houston data puts stain refinishing at $2,100 to $7,400 (angi.com, 2026). HomeAdvisor lists refinishing by sanding and staining or painting at $1,800 to $4,200 nationally (homeadvisor.com, 2026), and Fixr at $2,000 to $4,500 (fixr.com, 2026). Stain usually costs more than paint on the same kitchen because stripping to bare wood is slower than scuff sanding, and every scratch shows through stain where paint would hide it.

Stain when: the doors are solid wood (oak, maple, cherry, alder, hickory) and you want to go darker or shift the tone. Going lighter than the existing stain is possible but needs a full strip and sometimes bleaching, which costs more.

Do not stain when: the doors are MDF, laminate, thermofoil or veneer over particleboard. Stain needs real wood. Those doors can be painted or replaced, not restained.

Refacing Kitchen Cabinets

Refacing keeps the boxes and replaces what you see. New doors and drawer fronts in the style you pick, new hinges, and a matching veneer or laminate applied over the face frames and exposed box sides. From the front, it reads as a new kitchen. Inside, it is the same storage.

What it costs: Angi’s Houston average is $6,080, with most projects between $3,579 and $8,998, or $160 to $480 per linear foot (angi.com, 2026). Bob Vila’s Houston average is $5,890 (bobvila.com, 2024). Nationally, HomeAdvisor’s average is $7,230 (homeadvisor.com, 2026) and Fixr’s is $8,250, with solid wood refacing at $200 to $500 per linear foot versus laminate at $80 to $125 (fixr.com, 2026). Fixr puts the lifespan of a refaced kitchen at 10 to 20 years and the work at 3 to 5 days once materials are in (fixr.com, 2026).

Reface when: the boxes are solid, the layout works, and the doors are the problem: dated raised-panel style, peeling thermofoil, or damage on several doors. Refacing also lets you add a few new cabinets in the same style, since the new doors cover both.

Do not reface when: the boxes are particleboard that has swelled, the interior shelves are sagging, or you want to change the layout. Refacing at $6,000 on failing boxes is the most expensive mistake on this page, because the boxes still get replaced later.

Replacing Kitchen Cabinets

Replacement is new boxes, new doors, new hardware, usually with new countertops because the old counters rarely survive removal. It is the only option that changes the layout, adds an island, runs uppers to a 10-foot ceiling, or swaps door-and-shelf bases for drawers and pull-outs.

What it costs: full replacement in Houston runs $15,000 to $35,000 (freshcoatpainters.com, 2026). By tier, HomeAdvisor lists stock cabinets at $100 to $300 per linear foot installed, semi-custom at $150 to $650, and custom at $500 to $1,200 (homeadvisor.com, 2026). The custom cabinets cost in Houston page breaks down the drivers. For resale, the 2025 Cost vs. Value report puts a midrange minor kitchen remodel in Houston at $28,300 with 106 percent recouped (jlconline.com, 2025).

Replace when: boxes are water damaged or swollen, you want a different layout, the ceilings are tall and you want cabinets to reach them, or you want the storage that only new construction gives: deep drawers, pull-outs, a pantry wall. At Kitchen Remodel Masters, Jose builds the cabinets in our own Houston shop, so there is no factory lead time and the fit is to your walls.

Do not replace when: the boxes are solid plywood, the layout works and the only complaint is color or style. That kitchen is a candidate for paint or refacing at a quarter of the cost.

Decision Checklist

Run through these in order. The first “yes” that points to replacement usually ends the discussion.

  1. Box condition. Open the sink base and the cabinets by the dishwasher. Press on the bottom panel. If it is soft, swollen, or delaminated, replace. If it is solid, continue.
  2. Water damage. Any history of a dishwasher leak, a slab leak, or flooding from Harvey, Imelda, Beryl or a burst pipe in a freeze? Particleboard that has been wet is done even when it looks dry. Replace.
  3. Layout change. Do you want an island, a moved sink, a removed wall, a bigger refrigerator opening, or cabinets to the ceiling? Paint, stain and refacing keep the layout. Replace.
  4. Door material. Solid wood: paint or stain. MDF or already painted: paint. Thermofoil or laminate in good shape: paint with a bonding primer. Thermofoil peeling: reface or replace.
  5. Door style. If you like the door style and want a new color, paint. If you want a different door style on sound boxes, reface.
  6. Storage. If the complaint is “I cannot reach the back of the base cabinets,” no finish fixes it. Replace with drawer bases, or add pull-outs to existing boxes as a middle step.
  7. Budget. Under $8,000 in Houston market terms: paint or stain. $4,000 to $9,000: refacing. $15,000 and up: replacement. Financing through Synchrony is available for the larger projects; see financing options.

Houston Factors That Change the Answer

1990s honey oak in Katy, Sugar Land, Spring and Fulshear

Thousands of Houston-area homes built between 1988 and 2002 have the same cabinets: solid oak raised-panel or cathedral-arch doors in a honey or golden stain, on plywood or particleboard boxes. The doors are good wood. The color is what dates them. Paint with grain filler gives a smooth white or greige finish; a dark stain keeps the grain. Both cost far less than replacing cabinets that are structurally fine. The exception is the box material: if the boxes are particleboard and the kitchen has had any leak, check them before you spend on a finish.

Humidity

Houston averages about 75 percent relative humidity across the year. That affects all four options. Paint and stain take longer to cure in humid air, which is why a shop-sprayed finish beats an in-garage brush job here. Refacing veneer needs a clean, dry bond or it lifts at the edges. New cabinets should be built from plywood, not particleboard, and finished on all sides so the doors stay square through summer. The cabinet refinishing page covers the sprayed finishes we use.

Flood-era and leak-damaged boxes

A lot of Houston kitchens were rebuilt fast after Harvey in 2017, often with builder-grade particleboard cabinets. Those boxes are now 8 or 9 years old, and the ones near a dishwasher or sink are showing it. If the lower boxes swell at the toe kick or the shelf pins no longer hold, refacing is money lost. Replace the lowers, or the whole set, and keep the uppers if they are dry and solid.

Bungalows in the Heights, Montrose and Bellaire

Older homes have out-of-plumb walls and site-built cabinets from the 1940s to 1960s. Those boxes are often solid wood and worth keeping, and paint is the usual answer. Where the kitchen is being reworked, custom cabinets built to the actual walls beat stock sizes with filler strips.

Real Houston Example

Our cabinet refinishing and granite countertop project is the paint-plus-counters path: sound boxes, a sprayed finish on the existing doors, and new granite in the same layout. It is the version of a kitchen remodel that stays under the cost of new cabinets. For the replacement path, the custom flat-panel cabinets with quartzite countertops project shows a full set of shop-built cabinets.
