- Small Kitchen Remodel
A small kitchen remodel in Houston is a layout problem first and a finish problem second. The kitchens in Heights, Montrose and Bellaire bungalows, Montrose fourplexes and Inner Loop townhomes are 70 to 200 square feet, and the only way to get more out of them is to use the walls, the ceiling and the aisle better. Kitchen Remodel Masters builds the cabinets in our own shop to the exact inch, which is what makes a small kitchen work.
This page covers the housing stock where small kitchens are common, the galley and L layouts, what gives the most space, when to remove a wall, appliance sizing, the timeline and what a small kitchen remodel costs in the Houston market.
Small Kitchens in Houston Homes
- Heights, Montrose and Bellaire bungalows (1920s to 1960s): a 10x10 kitchen behind a wall or a swinging door to the dining room, often a single run of cabinets plus a free-standing range. See kitchen remodeling in The Heights and Montrose.
- Montrose and Upper Kirby fourplexes (1950s to 1970s): galley kitchens 7 to 8 feet wide with a window at the end.
- Inner Loop townhomes (1990s to today): a kitchen along one wall of the living level, 8 to 12 feet of builder-grade cabinets with a short peninsula, on a slab.
- 1970s and 1980s ranches in Spring Branch, Westbury and Meyerland: galley kitchens between the garage and the dining room, many rebuilt after Harvey.
The bungalow usually wants the wall out. The galley wants better cabinets and the right appliance sizes. The townhome wants a longer run and a real peninsula.
Galley and L-Shaped Layouts
Galley. Two parallel runs of cabinets with the aisle between them. It gives the most counter per square foot and the shortest walk between sink, range and refrigerator. The aisle decides whether it works: the National Kitchen and Bath Association guidelines call for at least 42 inches between the runs for one cook and 48 inches for two. Below 42 inches, the dishwasher door blocks the aisle. In a galley narrower than 8 feet, one run gets 24-inch-deep cabinets and the other 15-inch-deep cabinets to keep the aisle wide.
L-shaped. Two runs meeting in a corner, with the fourth side open to the dining room. It works in a 10x10 bungalow kitchen because the open side becomes a peninsula with seating once the wall comes out. The corner needs a lazy susan or a blind-corner pull-out, or it becomes dead storage.
A U layout only fits when the room is at least 9 feet wide, because three runs of 24-inch cabinets leave a 60-inch aisle at that width. Our kitchen island installation page covers when an island fits and when a peninsula is the better call.
What Gives a Small Kitchen the Most Space
The gains in a small kitchen come from a handful of choices, in this order.
- Uppers to the ceiling. The gap above standard 30-inch uppers is wasted. A 42-inch upper or a stacked upper under an 8- or 9-foot ceiling adds a full shelf per cabinet. Jose builds the uppers to the ceiling height in our shop.
- Drawers in the base cabinets. Deep drawers hold more than doors with shelves, and nothing gets lost in the back.
- 24-inch counters on one run only. In a narrow galley, keeping one run at 15 inches deep buys the aisle back.
- Pull-outs. A 9- or 12-inch pull-out pantry beside the refrigerator, a trash pull-out, a corner pull-out, a toe-kick drawer.
- Counter-depth refrigerator. A standard refrigerator sticks 6 inches past the counter and eats the aisle.
- Light colors and one material. White or light greige cabinets, a light quartz top and a backsplash that matches the counter read as one surface.
- Open shelving, sparingly. One or two shelves by the window add light. A whole wall of open shelves shows the clutter and loses the closed storage a small kitchen needs.
- Lighting. Under-cabinet LEDs and recessed cans instead of one ceiling fixture.
Our custom cabinets page shows the drawer and pull-out options; the custom cabinets cost guide shows what they run in Houston.
When to Remove a Wall
The wall between a bungalow kitchen and the dining room is the biggest space in the house that no one uses. Removing it does not add square feet to the kitchen, but it adds light, a sightline and a peninsula with seating, and it is the one change that makes a 10x10 kitchen feel twice its size.
Remove the wall when the kitchen is closed off from the room where people eat, when the layout is an L or a single run and a peninsula would add counter, or when there is no room for a table. Keep the wall when the kitchen is a galley with a window at the end, since the walls hold the cabinets, or when the budget is for cabinets and counters only.
A load-bearing wall needs an engineer’s letter, a City of Houston permit and a beam. Our open-concept kitchen remodel and wall removal page explains how a bearing wall is checked, the beam options and what it costs in the Houston market.
Appliance Sizing for a Small Kitchen
Appliances set the cabinet layout, so they are chosen first in the 3D design.
| Kitchen | Range | Dishwasher | Refrigerator |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10x10 bungalow or townhome | 30 inch | 24 inch | 30 or 33 inch counter-depth |
| Galley under 8 feet wide | 24 inch | 18 inch | 24 inch counter-depth |
| Any small kitchen | Slide-in range instead of a cooktop and wall oven | Drawer dishwasher where a full one blocks the aisle | Microwave drawer or over-the-range microwave |
A slide-in range saves the 30 inches a separate wall oven would take. A 24-inch range and an 18-inch dishwasher are standard sizes, not specialty orders, and they are the difference between a galley that works and one that does not.
Timeline
- Cabinet refinishing and new counters, same layout: about one week on site. See cabinet refinishing.
- New cabinets, counters, backsplash, lighting, same layout: 2 to 3 weeks of construction.
- New layout with the sink or range moved: 3 to 4 weeks, plus the City plumbing, gas or electrical permits.
- Wall removal added: two to four weeks before demolition for the engineer’s letter and the permit, then 3 to 4 weeks of construction.
Jose builds the cabinets and Eduardo fabricates the top in our shop before demolition starts, so the kitchen is closed for as few days as possible. Samuel sends daily photo updates and the crew cleans up each day.
What a Small Kitchen Remodel Costs in Houston
A small kitchen remodel runs $9,000 to $25,000 with a $16,000 national average according to This Old House (June 2026), which also puts the per-square-foot cost at $100 to $250. Bob Vila (May 2025) lists small kitchen remodels at $10,000 to $20,000. A 10x10 kitchen runs $10,000 to $25,000 with an average near $15,000 per Fixr (February 2025). Thumbtack (July 2026) puts a typical Houston kitchen remodel at $7,592 to $26,089, and small kitchens sit in the lower half of that range.
The fixed costs do not shrink with the room. The sink, faucet, disposal, hood, electrical work and dumpster cost the same in 100 square feet as in 200, so the per-square-foot number runs higher in a small kitchen. Cabinets stay the biggest line item.
Our 10x10 kitchen remodel cost in Houston guide breaks the budget into cabinets, counters, labor and layout changes for a 100-square-foot kitchen, and the kitchen remodel cost in Houston guide covers every size. Kitchen Remodel Masters does not publish a price list because layout changes, cabinet count and whether a wall comes out change the number for every kitchen. Financing is available through Synchrony; see our finance page.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a small kitchen remodel cost in Houston?
A small kitchen remodel runs $9,000 to $25,000 with a $16,000 national average according to This Old House (June 2026), and a 10x10 kitchen runs $10,000 to $25,000 per Fixr (February 2025). Thumbtack (July 2026) puts a typical Houston kitchen remodel at $7,592 to $26,089, and small kitchens sit in the lower half. Kitchen Remodel Masters prices each kitchen after a free in-home visit and 3D design.
What counts as a small kitchen?
This Old House (June 2026) defines a small kitchen as 70 to 200 square feet, with the average kitchen near 225 square feet. In Houston that covers the 10x10 bungalow kitchen in the Heights, a 7-foot-wide galley in a Montrose fourplex, and the kitchen in most Inner Loop townhomes.
What is the best layout for a small kitchen?
A galley (two parallel runs) or an L (two runs meeting in a corner) uses the least floor space per foot of counter. A galley needs at least 42 inches between the runs for one cook and 48 inches for two, per NKBA guidelines. An L opens one side to the dining room and fits a peninsula with seating. A U layout only works when the room is at least 9 feet wide.
Should I remove a wall to make my small kitchen bigger?
Often, yes. Removing the wall to the dining or living room is the one change that makes a 10x10 kitchen feel twice its size, and a peninsula on the opening adds counter and seating. A load-bearing wall needs an engineer's letter, a City of Houston permit and a beam, which adds $1,200 to $5,000 for a one-story home per HomeAdvisor (June 2026).
What gives a small kitchen the most storage?
Uppers that run to the ceiling, deep drawers instead of doors in the base cabinets, a pull-out pantry in a 12-inch gap, a corner lazy susan or blind-corner pull-out, and a toe-kick drawer. Jose builds all of these in our shop to the exact inch, which matters when every inch counts.
What size appliances fit a small kitchen?
A 30-inch range, a 24-inch dishwasher and a 30- or 33-inch counter-depth refrigerator fit most 10x10 kitchens. In a galley under 8 feet wide, a 24-inch range, an 18-inch dishwasher and a 24-inch counter-depth refrigerator keep the aisle at 42 inches. A microwave drawer or an over-the-range microwave saves the counter.
How long does a small kitchen remodel take?
Most full Kitchen Remodel Masters kitchens take 2 to 4 weeks of construction, and small kitchens land at the short end. A cabinet refinishing and countertop job without layout changes takes about a week. Removing a wall adds two to four weeks before demolition for the engineer's letter and the City permit.
Do I need a permit for a small kitchen remodel in Houston?
Not for cabinets, counters, backsplash, flooring or paint. The City of Houston requires permits for plumbing, gas and electrical changes and for removing a bearing wall. Moving the sink, adding circuits for new appliances, or relocating the range gas line all need a permit, which Samuel, our project manager, pulls and schedules.
