- Kitchen Island
Kitchen island installation in Houston starts with a tape measure, not a catalog. An island only works when the aisles around it are wide enough, the seating has room behind it, and any sink or cooktop has a path for plumbing and power through a slab foundation. Kitchen Remodel Masters builds the island cabinets in our own shop, fabricates the top in-house, and handles the slab cut, permits and inspections when the island needs water or gas.
This page covers clearances, common sizes, seating overhang, what a sink or cooktop adds on a Houston slab, cabinet and countertop options, prep islands versus full islands, the timeline and the market cost.
Kitchen Island Clearances
The National Kitchen and Bath Association planning guidelines are the standard we design to. They are recommendations, not code: kitchen planning guidelines. The numbers that decide whether an island fits:
| Space | Guideline |
|---|---|
| Work aisle, one cook (between island and counters or appliances) | 42 inches minimum |
| Work aisle, two cooks | 48 inches minimum |
| Walkway (pass-through side, no work) | 36 inches minimum |
| Behind seating, no traffic passing | 32 inches |
| Behind seating, people edging past | 36 inches |
| Behind seating, people walking past | 44 inches |
Measure the open floor between the base cabinets, not the walls. A kitchen 12 feet wide with cabinets on one wall fits a 24-inch-deep island with 42-inch aisles on both sides and little to spare. The 3D design shows the island at true scale, so you see the aisles before anything is built.
Common Kitchen Island Sizes
- 24 by 48 inches: a slim prep island for a bungalow or townhome kitchen. Storage on one side, no seating.
- 36 by 72 inches: the usual island in a 1990s to 2000s Katy, Sugar Land or Spring kitchen. Two stools on the back.
- 42 by 84 inches: room for a sink or cooktop on the working side and three stools.
- 48 by 96 inches and larger: the open-concept island that replaces a wall in Memorial and Spring Branch ranches. Four seats, a sink, and a slab that may need a seam.
Fixr (February 2025) calls a 40 by 80 inch island standard and prices islands at about $200 per square foot installed, so a 20 square foot island averages $4,000 and a 40 square foot island about $8,000.
Seating Overhang
Seating only works with knee room. The guidelines call for 24 inches of width per seat and a knee depth that depends on the counter height: 18 inches at a 30-inch table height, 15 inches at a 36-inch counter, and 12 inches at a 42-inch bar.
Most Houston islands are 36 inches high with a 15-inch overhang on the seating side. A quartz or granite overhang past 10 to 12 inches needs steel brackets let into the cabinet top, or wood corbels. Eduardo, our countertop fabricator, sizes the support when he templates the island.
Island With a Sink or Cooktop on a Houston Slab
Most Houston homes built after the 1960s sit on a slab-on-grade foundation. That changes what a sink or cooktop in the island involves.
- Sink. The drain needs a slope to the main line, so the path is cut into the slab. The crew saw-cuts the concrete, trenches, runs the drain and water lines, gets the City of Houston plumbing inspection, then pours the slab back. Running plumbing to an island costs $200 to $1,000 per Fixr (February 2025) and $500 to $1,900 per Angi data reported by NerdWallet (April 2026); slab work sits at the top of those ranges.
- Dishwasher. Shares the island drain path and gets its own circuit.
- Gas cooktop. A new gas line runs $500 to $2,000 per Fixr (February 2025), plus a gas permit and pressure test, and a downdraft unit or a hood over the island.
- Electrical. Code calls for outlets on the island. A GFCI outlet costs $50 to $150 each per Fixr (February 2025). An induction cooktop adds a dedicated 240-volt circuit.
On a pier-and-beam house in the Heights or Montrose, the plumbing runs under the floor instead, which is faster and cheaper. Any plumbing, gas or electrical work needs a City of Houston permit, which Samuel, our project manager, pulls and schedules. The cabinets and counter themselves need no permit.
Cabinets Built by Jose
Jose, our cabinet maker, has built cabinets for 20 years and builds every island in our shop on Washington Avenue. Because the cabinets are made to the design, not pulled from a catalog, the island can be any size the room allows.
- Door styles: shaker, slab or raised panel, matched to the kitchen or set off in a second color.
- Storage: deep drawers for pots, a trash pull-out, a microwave drawer, or open shelves on the seating side.
- Finish: sprayed in our shop, so it cures before the island reaches your kitchen.
Thumbtack (October 2025) prices stock island cabinets at $100 to $300 per linear foot installed and custom cabinets at $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. Our custom cabinets page covers construction details, and the custom cabinets cost guide shows Houston market ranges.
Countertop Choices by Eduardo
Eduardo, our countertop fabricator, has fabricated stone for 15 years and templates every island after the cabinets are set.
- Quartz: the most common island top in Houston. Consistent color, no sealing, and slabs that cover a 48 by 96 inch island without a seam. See quartz countertops in Houston.
- Granite: natural pattern, heat-tolerant, sealed once a year. See granite countertops in Houston.
- Quartzite, marble and porcelain: porcelain is thin and needs careful cutting, which is why the island in our wall removal project was fabricated in-house.
- Waterfall edge: the slab turns 90 degrees and runs down one or both ends to the floor. It uses more slab and a mitered joint, which Eduardo cuts so the veining runs around the corner.
Our quartz vs granite guide compares the two most common choices.
Prep Island vs Full Island
- Prep island: cabinets, a counter and outlets. No slab cut, no plumbing permit, one to two days to set.
- Full island: a sink, often a dishwasher, sometimes a cooktop, and seating. The island becomes the center of the kitchen.
A common Houston layout keeps the range on the wall with the hood, puts the sink and dishwasher in the island, and seats three or four on the back. It avoids a hood over the seating and puts the cook facing the room.
Timeline
- Prep island: cabinets and top built in our shop over one to two weeks; one to two days to set and wire.
- Island with a sink on a slab: about one week for the slab cut, rough plumbing, inspection and re-pour while the cabinets are built in the shop; one to two days to set the cabinets; the top templated, fabricated and installed the following week.
A full kitchen with an island fits inside the 2 to 4 weeks of construction most Kitchen Remodel Masters kitchens take. When the island replaces a wall, see our open-concept kitchen remodel page for the engineering and permit steps that come first.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to add a kitchen island in Houston?
A kitchen island runs $1,500 to $8,000 with a $5,000 average according to Fixr (February 2025), $3,000 to $20,000 with most people paying about $6,000 per Thumbtack (October 2025), and $4,800 on average per Angi data reported by NerdWallet (April 2026). Custom cabinets, a sink or a cooktop push a Houston island toward the top of those ranges. Kitchen Remodel Masters prices each island after a free in-home visit and 3D design.
How much space do you need around a kitchen island?
The NKBA planning guidelines call for a 42-inch work aisle for one cook and 48 inches for two cooks on the working sides, and a 36-inch walkway on sides that are only used to pass through. Behind seating, allow 32 inches if nobody walks behind the stools, 36 inches to edge past and 44 inches to walk past.
What is the smallest kitchen that fits an island?
An island needs about 42 inches of aisle on the working sides plus the island itself, which is at least 24 inches deep. A kitchen about 12 feet wide fits a slim 24 by 48 inch island with 42-inch aisles on each side. In a 10-foot-wide kitchen a peninsula off the end of the base cabinets usually works better than an island.
How much does a kitchen island with a sink cost?
Running plumbing to an island costs $200 to $1,000 per Fixr (February 2025) and $500 to $1,900 per Angi data reported by NerdWallet (April 2026), plus the sink at $400 to $1,500 and the faucet at $125 to $300. On a Houston slab-on-grade foundation the drain line means saw-cutting and trenching the slab, which sits at the top of those ranges and needs a City of Houston plumbing permit.
How much should a kitchen island overhang for seating?
NKBA guidelines call for 15 inches of knee depth at a 36-inch-high counter, 12 inches at a 42-inch bar height, and 24 inches of width per seat. A quartz or granite overhang beyond 10 to 12 inches usually needs steel brackets or corbels; Eduardo sizes the support when he templates the top.
Can you put a cooktop in a kitchen island?
Yes. A gas cooktop needs a new gas line at $500 to $2,000 per Fixr (February 2025), a gas permit and a pressure test; an induction cooktop needs a dedicated 240-volt circuit instead. Either one needs a downdraft vent or a ceiling hood. Many Houston clients choose a sink in the island and keep the cooktop on the wall to avoid the hood over the seating.
Do I need a permit to add a kitchen island in Houston?
Not for the cabinets and counter. The City of Houston requires permits for the plumbing, gas and electrical work that an island with a sink, cooktop or outlets needs. Samuel, our project manager, pulls those permits and schedules the inspections before the slab is closed and before the island is set.
How long does kitchen island installation take?
A prep island with outlets only takes one to two days to set once the cabinets and top are built. An island with a sink on a slab adds about a week for the slab cut, rough plumbing, inspection and re-pour before the cabinets go in. Jose builds the cabinets and Eduardo fabricates the top in our shop while that work happens, so the full project usually runs two to three weeks.
