- Galley Kitchen Remodel
A galley kitchen remodel in Houston replaces two parallel runs of cabinets, counters and lighting between the same two walls, or opens one of those walls to the dining room with a peninsula. In the Houston market a galley or small kitchen remodel runs $8,100 to $31,600 with a $16,200 average according to Angi (October 2026), $7,592 to $26,089 for a typical Houston kitchen per Thumbtack (July 2026), and $10,000 to $25,000 for a 10x10 kitchen per Fixr (February 2025).
Kitchen Remodel Masters builds the cabinets for every galley kitchen remodel in our own shop, which is how a 7-foot-wide Heights bungalow kitchen ends up with a 42-inch aisle and more storage than it had. For small kitchens of every shape, see our small kitchen remodel in Houston page; this one is about the galley only.
Where Galley Kitchens Are in Houston
- 1920s to 1960s bungalows in The Heights, Montrose, Bellaire, Eastwood and Idylwood. A 7- to 9-foot-wide kitchen at the back of the house, window at the end, door to the dining room, pier-and-beam floor. See kitchen remodeling in The Heights and Montrose.
- 1950s to 1970s ranch houses in Oak Forest, Spring Branch and Meyerland. A galley between the garage and the dining room, 8 to 10 feet wide, on a slab; many Meyerland galleys were rebuilt after Harvey in the original layout.
- Inner Loop townhomes. A galley on the living level facing a short peninsula, 1990s and 2000s builder-grade cabinets.
The 42-Inch Aisle Rule
The aisle decides whether a galley kitchen remodel works. The National Kitchen and Bath Association planning guidelines (guidance, not code) require a 42-inch work aisle for one cook and 48 inches for two, measured between counter fronts, tall cabinets and appliances. A walkway people only pass through can be 36 inches.
The math for a bungalow galley: a 7-foot room is 84 inches. Two runs of 24-inch-deep base cabinets leave 36 inches, a walkway, not a work aisle. Build one run 15 inches deep and the aisle grows to 45 inches. That is the most common fix in a Houston galley kitchen renovation, and it needs custom cabinets built to that depth, which Jose, our cabinet maker of 20 years, does in our shop.
Keep It a Galley, Open One Wall, or Go Open Concept
Three galley kitchen layout ideas cover almost every Houston house.
Keep it a galley. Same walls, new cabinets to the ceiling, new counters and lighting, the right appliance sizes. Keep it when the window at the end is the best thing in the room, when two walls hold the storage you need, and when the budget is for cabinets and counters. No permit when the sink and range stay put.
Open one wall to a peninsula. The wall to the dining room comes out and a peninsula with seating replaces the base cabinets that stood there, so the galley joins the room where people eat. A non-bearing wall is a day of work. A load-bearing wall needs an engineer’s letter, a City of Houston structural permit and a beam.
Full open concept with an island. An island needs a 42-inch aisle on each side plus 36 inches of island, so with 24-inch bases on both walls the room must be about 14 feet wide; Angi (October 2026) notes most galleys are not that wide. Our open-concept kitchen remodel and wall removal page covers how a bearing wall is checked, the beam options and the permit.
| Option | Scope | Typical Houston market cost | Time on site |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep it a galley | Cabinets, counters, backsplash, lighting, same layout | $8,100 to $31,600 (Angi, October 2026); 10x10 at $10,000 to $25,000 (Fixr, February 2025) | 2 to 3 weeks |
| Open one wall to a peninsula | Galley scope plus wall out, peninsula, floor and ceiling patch | Galley cost plus $300 to $1,000 for a non-bearing wall, or $1,200 to $5,000 for a bearing wall in a one-story home plus a $200 to $1,400 engineer’s evaluation (HomeAdvisor, June 2026) | 3 to 4 weeks, plus 2 to 4 weeks before demo for the engineer and permit |
| Full open concept with an island | Wall removal, island, often a moved sink | $30,000 to $60,000 or more for a high-end 10x10 (Block Renovation, January 2025), plus $1,000 to $4,000 to move a sink on a slab (Fixr, February 2025) | 4 weeks, the long end of our range |
Storage Moves Specific to a Galley
The storage plan follows from two full walls of cabinet and a hard limit on the aisle.
- Both runs to the ceiling. A 42-inch upper per bay instead of a 30-inch upper and a dust shelf.
- Drawers instead of doors in every base. Two doors opening across a 42-inch aisle collide; drawers do not, and they hold more.
- One deep run, one shallow run. 24 inches on the sink and range side, 15 inches on the other, in any galley under 8 feet wide.
- Pantry pull-outs and a tall end-wall pantry. A 12-inch pull-out beside the refrigerator, and a 12-inch-deep floor-to-ceiling pantry on the end wall when no window is there.
- Toe-kick drawers. Four inches of sheet pans under every base cabinet.
Lighting and Ventilation
Most Houston galleys have one window at the end and none on the long walls, so one ceiling fixture leaves both counters in your own shadow. The fix is three layers: recessed lights centered over each run, under-cabinet LED strips on both sides, and a brighter fixture at the sink window.
Ventilation matters more in Houston. A recirculating microwave hood puts cooking moisture back into a room that is already humid; a hood that vents outside keeps grease off the uppers and moisture off the paint. The duct runs through the attic in a ranch house and out the back wall in a bungalow.
Appliance Placement in a Galley
The work triangle in a galley is a line across the aisle. Sink and dishwasher on one run, range on the other, offset a few feet so two people are not working back to back. Refrigerator at the entry end so someone getting a drink does not cross the cook’s zone, pantry beside it so the tall boxes stand together and the counters stay unbroken. Keep the dishwasher door and the oven door from opening into the same spot.
Sizes follow the aisle: at 8 feet wide or more, a 30-inch range, a 24-inch dishwasher and a counter-depth refrigerator; under 8 feet, a 24-inch range, an 18-inch dishwasher and a 24-inch counter-depth refrigerator. A standard-depth refrigerator sticks 6 inches past the counter and is the usual reason an aisle fails.
Houston Houses and What Hides in Them
- Pier-and-beam bungalows. The sink drain runs under the floor, so moving the sink to the other run costs less than on a slab, but it still needs a City plumbing permit. Floors are often an inch out of level; we shim the bases so the counter reads flat.
- Original wiring. 1920s to 1950s kitchens often have one or two circuits. A dishwasher, microwave, disposal and counter outlets each want their own, which means an electrical permit and sometimes a panel upgrade. See kitchen remodel permits in Houston.
- Slab ranch houses. Moving the sink means saw-cutting the slab, $1,000 to $4,000 per Fixr (February 2025). Keeping the sink on its wall saves that line.
What a Galley Kitchen Remodel Costs in Houston
Angi (October 2026) prices a 100 square foot galley at $7,500 to $20,000 inside its $8,100 to $31,600 range, and This Old House (June 2026) puts a small kitchen remodel at $9,000 to $25,000 with a $16,000 average. A same-layout galley sits in the lower half of Thumbtack’s $7,592 to $26,089 Houston range (July 2026). Cabinets are the biggest line because a galley is all cabinets: our 10x10 kitchen remodel cost in Houston guide does that math, and the kitchen remodel cost in Houston guide covers every size. Kitchen Remodel Masters does not publish a price list because the aisle, the wall and what is behind it change the number for every galley kitchen remodel.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a galley kitchen remodel cost in Houston?
A galley kitchen remodel runs $8,100 to $31,600 with a $16,200 average according to Angi (October 2026), and a 100 square foot galley lands at $7,500 to $20,000 in the same guide. Thumbtack (July 2026) puts a typical Houston kitchen remodel at $7,592 to $26,089, and Fixr (February 2025) lists a 10x10 kitchen at $10,000 to $25,000. Kitchen Remodel Masters prices each galley after a free in-home visit and 3D design.
How wide does a galley kitchen aisle need to be?
The National Kitchen and Bath Association planning guidelines call for a work aisle of at least 42 inches for one cook and 48 inches for two, measured between counter fronts, tall cabinets and appliances. A walkway that people only pass through can be 36 inches. Below 42 inches an open dishwasher door blocks the aisle and two people cannot pass.
Should I keep my galley kitchen or open it up?
Keep it when the galley has a window at the end, the walls carry the cabinets you need, and the budget is for cabinets, counters and lighting. Open one wall when the kitchen is cut off from the room where people eat; a peninsula on the opening keeps the storage of the wall you removed. Go full open concept only when the room is wide enough for an island with 42-inch aisles on both sides.
Can you put an island in a galley kitchen?
Rarely. An island needs a 42-inch aisle on each side plus at least 36 inches for the island itself, so with 24-inch base cabinets on both walls the room has to be about 14 feet wide. Most Houston galleys are 7 to 10 feet wide. Angi (October 2026) notes the same: most galley kitchens are not wide enough for an island. A peninsula off the end of one run is the usual answer.
Do I need a permit to remodel a galley kitchen in Houston?
Not when the cabinets, counters, backsplash, flooring and lighting fixtures change in the same layout. The City of Houston requires a permit when plumbing, gas or electrical moves and when a load-bearing wall comes out, which also needs an engineer's letter. Samuel, our project manager, pulls and schedules any permit the job needs.
How long does a galley kitchen remodel take?
Most full Kitchen Remodel Masters kitchens take 2 to 4 weeks on site, and a galley in the same layout lands at the short end. Opening a wall adds two to four weeks before demolition for the engineer's letter and the City of Houston permit, then 3 to 4 weeks of construction. Jose builds the cabinets and Eduardo fabricates the counters in our shop before demo starts.
What is the best layout for a galley kitchen?
Sink on one run, range on the other and offset so the two of you are not back to back, refrigerator at the entry end so guests can reach it without crossing the work zone. Keep the dishwasher and oven doors from opening into the same spot. Put the tall pantry and refrigerator at the same end so the counters between them stay unbroken.
How do I get more storage in a galley kitchen?
Run both rows of uppers to the ceiling, use drawers instead of doors in the base cabinets so nothing swings into the aisle, add a pull-out pantry beside the refrigerator and a tall shallow pantry on the end wall, and use toe-kick drawers under the bases. In a galley under 8 feet wide, build one run of cabinets 15 inches deep to hold the 42-inch aisle. Jose builds all of these to the inch in our shop.
What size appliances fit a galley kitchen?
In a galley 8 feet wide or wider, a 30-inch range, a 24-inch dishwasher and a counter-depth refrigerator fit with a 42-inch aisle. Under 8 feet, a 24-inch range, an 18-inch dishwasher and a 24-inch counter-depth refrigerator keep the aisle legal. A standard-depth refrigerator sticks 6 inches past the counter and is the most common reason a galley aisle fails.
Can a galley kitchen have good lighting?
Yes, with layers. Galleys usually have one window at the end and none on the long walls, so one ceiling fixture leaves both counters in shadow. Recessed lights centered over each counter run, under-cabinet LED strips on both sides and a range hood that vents outside through the roof or wall fix it. The vented hood matters more in Houston, where humidity keeps cooking moisture in the room.
