Kitchen backsplash installation in Houston covers removing the old backsplash, repairing the wall, setting new tile or a stone slab between the countertop and the upper cabinets, grouting, and sealing. It runs $15 to $40 per square foot installed, or $480 to $1,500 for a typical 30 to 40 square foot kitchen, per Angi and HomeAdvisor (2026); Fixr (2025) puts the average job at $1,000 and Thumbtack (2026) at $593 to $1,786, with marble, mosaic and slab backsplashes above those ranges.

Kitchen Remodel Masters installs backsplash tile as part of every kitchen remodel and countertop replacement we do in Houston. Our designer helps you pick the tile at the free consultation, the 3D design shows it against your cabinets and countertop before anything is ordered, and the tile goes in right after Eduardo, our fabricator of 15 years, installs the countertop he cut in our shop. Prices here are Houston market ranges from named sources, not Kitchen Remodel Masters quotes.

Backsplash Tile Types and What They Cost Installed

The tile is the biggest cost factor. Every figure below includes labor.

  • Ceramic subway tile. $12 to $32 per square foot (Angi 2026). The 3 by 6 inch white subway tile is still the most common choice in Houston kitchens. Glazed, easy to cut, easy to clean.
  • Porcelain tile. $14 to $28 per square foot (Angi 2026). Denser than ceramic, so it chips less around outlets and corners. Comes in stone and wood looks.
  • Glass tile. $18 to $43 per square foot (Fixr 2025). Needs white mortar so the color does not shift, and shows water spots behind the sink.
  • Marble and natural stone. $30 to $150 per square foot for marble, $20 to $68 for other natural stone (Angi 2026). Needs sealing and etches from acids.
  • Slab backsplash. A full-height piece of the same quartz, quartzite or granite as the countertop. Slabs average $30 per square foot installed, about double tile (Fixr 2025), because the stone is cut, polished and set as one piece. No grout lines, so it is the easiest backsplash to keep clean.
  • Mosaic. Sheet-mounted mosaic installs at about $15 per square foot, hand-set small tile about $30 (Fixr 2025), and handmade mosaic can pass $100 (HomeAdvisor 2026). Patterns such as herringbone add 10 to 20 percent to labor (Fixr 2025).

Full Height, 18 Inches, or 4 Inches

Three heights show up in Houston kitchens.

  • Full height runs from the countertop to the upper cabinets, about 18 inches, and up to the hood behind the range. This is what most new Houston kitchens get and what a kitchen remodel with us includes.
  • 18 inches is the same height but stops at the ends of the upper cabinets instead of wrapping open walls.
  • 4-inch stone backsplash is a short strip of countertop material glued to the wall. Builders used it in 1990s and 2000s kitchens in Katy, Sugar Land and Spring. It leaves 14 inches of painted drywall above it that gets splattered and scrubbed.

Removing an Old 4-Inch Stone Backsplash

This comes with almost every countertop replacement on a 1990s kitchen. The strip is glued straight to the drywall, and when it comes off it takes the paper face with it along a 4-inch band around the kitchen.

Angi (2026) prices backsplash removal at $3 to $6 per square foot; HomeAdvisor (2026) puts removal plus wall prep at $150 to $600. The repair is a skim coat of joint compound over the torn band, or a new strip of drywall where the gypsum crumbled. A full-height tile backsplash then covers the patch and the old paint line, so nothing above the counter needs repainting. The countertop replacement FAQ covers when an old tile backsplash can stay.

Grout and Sealing

  • Cement grout is the standard. It costs less, comes in every color, and is porous, so it needs a penetrating sealer after it cures and again about once a year.
  • Epoxy grout is non-porous. It resists stains, grease and mildew, never needs sealing, and holds its color, per Laticrete’s guide to epoxy grout (2025). It costs more and sets faster. We use it behind the range and the sink, where grout gets the most abuse.
  • Sealing the tile only applies to natural stone. Marble, travertine and slate get a penetrating sealer; glazed ceramic, porcelain, glass and quartz slab do not need one.
  • The counter-to-tile joint gets color-matched silicone, not grout. Grout cracks there because the countertop and the wall move at different rates.

Outlets and Under-Cabinet Lighting

Every outlet and switch on the backsplash wall gets cut around, and the cover plates go back on with longer screws or box extenders so they sit flat on the tile.

The backsplash job is the right time to add lighting. Hardwired under-cabinet LED strips cost about $300 per fixture installed, and a new GFCI outlet for plug-in strips runs $200 to $300 (Fixr 2025). The wiring goes in before the tile and gets an electrical permit; the tile needs none.

Pairing the Backsplash With Your Countertop

We pick the two together in the 3D design.

  • With quartz countertops, a plain white or light gray quartz pairs with almost any tile. A busy-veined quartz pairs best with a plain tile or a slab of the same quartz.
  • With granite countertops, pull one of the minor colors in the stone into the tile. Speckled granite with speckled tile fights itself.
  • With quartzite or marble, most clients run the slab up the wall behind the range only and use a quiet tile everywhere else.

The countertop replacement cost guide covers what a slab backsplash adds to a countertop job.

Houston Problems a Backsplash Has to Survive

  • Humidity and grout mildew. Houston’s average humidity is 74.7 percent (NOAA normals via Wikipedia). Cement grout behind a sink that stays damp grows gray mildew within a year or two. Epoxy grout and a range hood that vents outside fix most of it.
  • Hard water on glass tile. Houston tap water leaves mineral spots on glass tile behind the sink. A matte or textured tile hides them; glossy dark glass shows every drop.
  • 1990s builder kitchens. The 4-inch granite backsplash and the painted band above it. Almost every countertop job on these kitchens includes a full-height tile backsplash.
  • Heights and Montrose bungalows. 1920s to 1940s houses in The Heights often have plaster over lath. Cracked plaster is not flat and does not hold tile, so the backsplash wall gets new drywall or cement board first.

Backsplash Installation Cost in Houston

Material Installed per square foot Typical 30 to 40 square foot kitchen Source
Ceramic subway tile $12 to $32 $360 to $1,280 Angi, 2026
Porcelain tile $14 to $28 $420 to $1,120 Angi, 2026
Glass tile $18 to $43 $540 to $1,720 Fixr, 2025
Natural stone tile $20 to $68 $600 to $2,720 Angi, 2026
Marble tile $30 to $150 $900 to $6,000 Angi and Fixr
Quartz or granite slab $15 to $75 $600 to $3,000 Fixr, 2025
Any backsplash, mid-range national $33 to $56 $990 to $2,240 Homewyse, May 2026
Old backsplash removal $3 to $6 $90 to $240 Angi and HomeAdvisor, 2026

The per-kitchen column is our arithmetic from the per-square-foot range. Labor is $5 to $20 per square foot or $50 to $100 an hour (Angi 2026). Homewyse runs higher because it models a tile contractor alone on a small job with a two-hour minimum.

On a Kitchen Remodel Masters countertop or kitchen job, the backsplash is one line in the proposal with the tile, removal, wall repair and grout, so there is no separate tile contractor to schedule. Most countertop-plus-backsplash jobs finish within days. Read Stacy Uy’s review and others on our reviews page.
