Kitchen design in Houston starts with a free 3D rendering at Kitchen Remodel Masters: Sean Carmel measures your kitchen, then you see the new layout, cabinets, countertops, backsplash, flooring and lighting in a model of your own room before anything is ordered. The design takes 2 to 3 weeks and feeds directly into Jose’s cabinet shop and Eduardo’s countertop templating, so what you approve on screen is what gets built.
This page covers what the design includes, how it prevents change orders, the layout rules we design to, how material selection works, and the timeline.
What the Free 3D Kitchen Design Includes
The design is a full set of decisions, not a sketch. Each item below is settled before the proposal is written.
- Layout. Wall-by-wall cabinet runs with exact widths, the island or peninsula size, and the clearances around them.
- Cabinet style and color. Door profile (shaker, flat-panel, raised-panel, inset or overlay), finish (paint, stain or natural wood), and interior storage such as pull-out waste bins, tray dividers and drawer organizers. The 2026 Houzz Kitchen Trends Study found 68% of renovating homeowners replace all their cabinets, 64% add pull-out waste bins and 55% add tray storage.
- Countertop. Material (quartz, granite, quartzite, marble or porcelain), thickness, edge profile, and the seam plan for an island.
- Backsplash. Tile layout or full-height slab, with the pattern drawn to scale so the cuts fall where you expect.
- Flooring. Tile, wood or luxury vinyl plank, with the transition to adjoining rooms.
- Lighting. Recessed cans, under-cabinet strips, pendants and switching, placed over the work areas.
- Appliance openings. Sizes from the manufacturer spec sheet for the range, refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave and hood, so the cabinets fit on install day.
You get renderings from several angles and a floor plan with dimensions. Revisions are part of the process; most kitchens take one or two rounds.
How a Finished Design Prevents Change Orders
Change orders happen when a decision is made in the middle of construction. The cabinets arrive and the refrigerator is a half inch wider than the opening. The island goes in and the walkway to the pantry is 32 inches. The electrician asks where the pendants go while the ceiling is open.
A dimensioned 3D design answers those questions in week two instead of week six. Every cabinet width, every appliance opening and every counter cutout is on the drawing. The written proposal lists each item by name and quantity with no open allowances, so the price you sign is the price you pay unless you choose to add something. Our process page shows how the design hands off to construction with daily photo updates.
The Work Triangle and Kitchen Zones
Two ideas drive most of our layouts. The first is the work triangle, the path between the sink, the cooktop and the refrigerator. Check the Kitchen Planning Guidelines from the National Kitchen and Bath Association; they recommend:
- Each leg of the triangle between 4 and 9 feet.
- The three legs adding up to 26 feet or less.
- No island, peninsula or tall cabinet cutting into a leg by more than 12 inches.
- Walkways at least 36 inches wide, and work aisles with counters on both sides at least 42 inches wide for one cook or 48 inches for two.
The second idea is zones. A kitchen used by a family cooking most nights works better when it is split into a prep zone (sink, trash, knives, cutting boards), a cooking zone (range, pans, oils, spices), a cleanup zone (dishwasher, dish storage) and a storage zone (pantry, refrigerator).
Kitchen Layouts We Design in Houston
| Layout | Works best in | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Galley | Narrow rooms, 1920s to 1950s bungalows in the Heights, Montrose and Bellaire | Aisle under 42 inches; two cooks collide |
| L-shape | Kitchens open to a dining or family room | Dead corner cabinet; add a lazy susan or blind-corner pull-out |
| U-shape | Closed kitchens that need the most counter and storage | Two dead corners; the opening must stay at least 36 inches |
| Island | Rooms about 12 feet wide or more, open-plan homes in Memorial, Sugar Land and The Woodlands | 42 inch clearance on every side; island plumbing on a slab foundation means cutting concrete |
| Peninsula | 10 by 10 and other small kitchens that want seating | Keeps the walkway open when an island would not fit |
Many of our 1990s suburban kitchens start as a U-shape with a peninsula and end as an L-shape with an island once a non-bearing wall comes out. When the wall is bearing, the design includes an engineered beam. Our kitchen wall removal project shows that change in a Houston home.
Material Selection With Real Samples
A rendering gets the proportions right. Color needs daylight. Once the layout is approved, you choose finishes from physical samples:
- Cabinet doors. Sample doors in your chosen profile and finish, sprayed in the same shop where Jose builds the full set. Wood tones overtook white as the most requested cabinet color in the 2026 Houzz study, and samples show how a stain reads under your lighting.
- Countertops. Quartz and porcelain samples from the fabrication shop; for granite, quartzite and marble, you pick the exact slabs at the stone yard with Eduardo so the veining lands where you want it on the island. Our guide on how to choose the perfect countertop in Houston compares the materials.
- Tile, flooring and hardware. Samples held against the door sample, because a backsplash that looks white online often reads gray next to a cream cabinet.
Houston humidity is a design input too. Solid wood doors move with moisture, so wide slab doors are built with stable cores, and painted finishes get full cure time in the shop before they are hung.
How the Design Feeds the Shop
Because Kitchen Remodel Masters builds cabinets and fabricates countertops in-house, the design is a shop drawing, not a wish list.
- Cabinets. Jose takes the approved layout and builds each box, door and drawer front to the dimensions on the drawing. There is no supplier lead time of 8 to 12 weeks, the range Block Renovation (2025) cites for outside custom cabinets, because the build starts while the permit is in review.
- Countertops. After the cabinets are set, Eduardo templates the actual installed boxes, cuts the slab you selected, and installs. The design told him the seam plan and the sink cutout weeks earlier, so templating confirms rather than discovers.

Kitchen Design Timeline
| Step | Time |
|---|---|
| In-home consultation and measurements | 1 visit, about an hour |
| First 3D design and proposal | 1 to 2 weeks |
| Revisions and sample selection | 1 week |
| Slab selection and appliance confirmation | During revisions |
| Approved design to shop | Same week |
Two to three weeks total is typical. Block Renovation (2025) lists design development at 2 to 6 weeks for a remodel, and Fixr (2025) puts planning at up to three weeks when a structural engineer and a custom cabinet maker are involved; having the cabinet maker in-house keeps us at the short end.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the kitchen design consultation free?
Yes. Kitchen Remodel Masters includes the in-home consultation and the 3D design at no charge for homeowners in the Houston area. Sean Carmel measures the kitchen, talks through how you cook and store things, and comes back with a 3D rendering and a written proposal. There is no design fee and no obligation.
What is included in the 3D kitchen design?
The layout with exact cabinet sizes, the cabinet door style and color, the countertop material and edge, the backsplash, the flooring, the lighting plan and the appliance openings, all rendered in a model of your actual room. You can see the kitchen from several angles and change any item before it is built.
How long does kitchen design take?
Most Kitchen Remodel Masters designs take 2 to 3 weeks from the first visit to an approved rendering, including one or two revision rounds. Block Renovation (2025) puts design development at 2 to 6 weeks for a typical remodel, and Fixr (2025) says up to three weeks when a structural engineer and custom cabinet maker are involved. Kitchens with wall removal or an addition sit at the longer end.
What is the kitchen work triangle?
The work triangle connects the sink, the cooktop and the refrigerator. The NKBA Kitchen Planning Guidelines recommend each leg be 4 to 9 feet, the three legs add up to 26 feet or less, and no cabinet or island cut into a leg by more than 12 inches. Most Houston kitchens that feel awkward break one of those three rules.
How wide should a kitchen walkway be?
The NKBA Kitchen Planning Guidelines call for walkways at least 36 inches wide and work aisles, where there are counters or appliances on both sides, at least 42 inches for one cook and 48 inches for two. We design islands to those numbers, which is why a 10 by 10 kitchen usually gets a peninsula instead of an island.
Which kitchen layout is best: galley, L-shape, U-shape or island?
It depends on the room. A galley suits narrow Heights and Montrose bungalows. An L-shape opens a corner to a dining area. A U-shape gives the most counter and storage in a closed kitchen. An island layout needs at least 42 inches of clearance on every side, so it works in rooms about 12 feet wide or more. The 3D design tests each one in your dimensions.
Can I see real material samples, not just a rendering?
Yes. Door samples in the finish you chose come from Jose's cabinet shop, and countertop samples come from Eduardo's fabrication shop. For natural stone you pick the exact slab at the yard. Renderings get the layout right; samples in your light get the color right.
How does the design prevent change orders?
Because every cabinet, appliance opening and counter cutout is dimensioned in the design before the proposal is written, there is nothing left to decide on site. Change orders usually come from decisions made mid-build. A finished design removes most of them, and the written proposal lists every item so there are no open allowances.
Do you design kitchens for additions and wall removals?
Yes. When the design removes a bearing wall or adds square footage, Kitchen Remodel Masters brings in an engineer for the beam design, and the drawings go to the City of Houston for the permit. The 3D design is built on the new footprint so you see the finished space, not just the existing room.
