- Master Bathroom Remodel
A master bathroom remodel in Houston runs $23,503 for a midrange remodel and $75,005 for an upscale one, according to the 2025 Cost vs Value report for Houston (jlconline.com, 2025). Kitchen Remodel Masters builds the double vanity in our own shop, fabricates the stone top in house, and handles the shower or wet room, tile, lighting and plumbing, usually in 3 to 5 weeks of construction.
What a Master Bathroom Remodel Includes
- Double vanity. Two sinks, drawer stacks on both sides, a tower or medicine cabinets between them, built in our shop by Jose.
- Walk-in shower. A 42-by-60 or larger shower with a bench, a niche, a thermostatic valve and frameless glass. Details on the walk-in shower installation page.
- Freestanding tub, or not. A soaking tub if the house has no other tub or you will use it; otherwise the space goes to a larger shower.
- Wet room. The shower and the tub share one waterproofed, tiled zone behind a fixed glass panel. Fixr prices a wet room at $11,000 to $22,000 (2025).
- Water closet. A separate toilet room with a pocket door.
- Heated floors. An electric mat under the tile. $721 to $2,097 as an add-on per HomeYou (2026).
- Lighting. Sconces at the mirror, recessed cans over the shower and tub, and an exhaust fan on a timer.
If the room has a 1990s jetted garden tub nobody has used in years, that is usually where the new shower goes.
Layout Changes on a Slab
Most Houston homes sit on a concrete slab, so every drain is under the concrete. Moving the toilet, the shower drain or the tub drain means saw-cutting the slab, rerouting the drain and the vent, and pouring the slab back. It is routine, and it is the biggest single cost driver in a master bath.
The way to hold the budget is to move the fixture that is cheapest to move. A vanity only needs supply lines and a drain stub in the wall; a toilet needs a 3-inch drain and a vent; a shower needs a drain, a trap and a sloped pan. We price the slab work for each layout in the free 3D design.
A load-bearing wall that comes down needs a building permit and an engineer, the same as our kitchen wall removal projects.
Custom Vanity and Stone Top
Jose has built cabinets for 20 years and builds every vanity in Kitchen Remodel Masters’ own shop. A shop-built vanity fits the wall exactly: a 71-inch wall gets a 71-inch vanity, not a 60-inch box and a filler strip. Drawer boxes are sized around the plumbing and the finish is sprayed in the shop.
Eduardo fabricates the stone top in house. Quartz is the usual pick because it needs no sealing. Quartzite and marble are chosen for the look and sealed on a schedule because of Houston’s hard water. HomeAdvisor lists a vanity at $300 to $3,800 (2026); a shop-built double vanity with stone sits at the top of that range. See custom cabinets and countertop replacement.
Tile and Finishes
- Floor. 12-by-24 or 24-by-48 porcelain, often in a marble look with no sealing. Angi Houston prices tile at $2 to $50 per square foot installed (2026).
- Shower walls. Large-format porcelain or porcelain slab to cut grout lines.
- Shower floor. Small mosaic or textured tile for grip and slope, or large-format tile with a linear drain.
- Grout. High-performance or epoxy grout for mold and stain resistance in Houston humidity.
- Exhaust. A fan sized at 1 CFM per square foot, 50 CFM minimum, vented outside.
Every tile shower gets a full waterproofing membrane and a flood test before tile, with photos the same day.
Master Bathroom Remodels in Houston Neighborhoods
- Memorial and Memorial Villages. 1960s to 1980s ranch homes with long, narrow primary baths and a garden tub under a window. Common plan: tub out, 60-inch walk-in shower in its place, double vanity on the long wall. See Memorial.
- River Oaks. Larger rooms, marble and quartzite, wet rooms with a freestanding tub, separate water closets. See River Oaks.
- Bellaire. Newer two-story homes with a large upstairs primary bath in builder-grade tile. Common plan: new vanity and stone, larger shower, heated floor. See Bellaire.
- The Heights. 1920s to 1950s bungalows where the primary bath was added later, so layout changes are the norm. See The Heights.
How Long a Master Bathroom Remodel Takes
Most Kitchen Remodel Masters master bathroom remodels take 3 to 5 weeks of construction.
- Before demo: 3D design, vanity built in the shop, tile and fixtures ordered.
- Week 1: demo, slab cuts, plumbing and electrical rough-in, inspections.
- Week 2: framing, backer board, waterproofing, flood test, floor tile.
- Week 3: shower tile, grout, vanity set, countertop templated and installed.
- Weeks 4 to 5: glass, plumbing trim, lighting, paint, final walkthrough.
Samuel, our project manager, sends daily photo updates and the crew cleans up each day. Most clients stay in the house and use the hall bath.

What moves the price: moving drains in the slab, a wet room, a shop-built vanity with stone, natural stone instead of porcelain, and a heated floor. Kitchen Remodel Masters does not publish a price list because the layout and the materials change the number for every room. Our bathroom remodel cost guide goes deeper, our guide on how to choose a bathroom remodeling contractor lists the questions to ask any bidder, and the bathroom remodeling hub covers everything we do in a bath. Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a master bathroom remodel cost in Houston?
The 2025 Cost vs Value report puts a midrange bath remodel in Houston at $23,503 and an upscale remodel at $75,005 (jlconline.com, 2025). Angi's Houston page lists a full remodel at $25,000 to $80,000 (2026), and HomeAdvisor's national primary bathroom range is $7,000 to $30,000 (2026). Layout changes, a wet room, custom cabinetry and stone push a project toward the top. Kitchen Remodel Masters prices each bathroom after a free in-home visit.
How long does a master bathroom remodel take?
Most Kitchen Remodel Masters master bathroom remodels take 3 to 5 weeks of construction. Demo and plumbing rough-in come first, then inspections, waterproofing, tile, the vanity and stone top, glass and fixtures. The vanity is built in our shop before demo starts, so it is ready when the tile is done. Glass arrives 1 to 2 weeks after the shower tile is grouted.
Can you move the toilet or the shower on a slab foundation?
Yes. Most Houston homes sit on a concrete slab, so moving a drain means saw-cutting the slab, rerouting the drain and the vent, and pouring the concrete back. It is routine, but it is the single biggest cost driver in a layout change. Keeping the toilet and the shower drain where they are and only moving the vanity keeps the slab work to a minimum.
Should I keep a bathtub in the master bathroom?
Keep a tub somewhere in the house. Fixr (2025) notes that removing the only tub can lower resale value. In a master bath, a freestanding soaking tub in a wet room with the shower is the common choice. If the hall bath keeps its tub, a shower-only master with a large walk-in shower is fine.
What is a wet room?
A wet room is a fully waterproofed, tiled zone that holds both the shower and a freestanding tub behind one fixed glass panel, with no curb and no door. Fixr prices a wet room at $11,000 to $22,000 compared to $5,000 to $11,000 for a standard walk-in shower (2025). It suits a master bath where the tub and shower share a wall.
Who builds the double vanity?
Jose, our cabinet maker, builds every vanity in Kitchen Remodel Masters' own shop. A double vanity is usually 60 to 84 inches wide with two sinks, drawer stacks and a tower or medicine cabinet between them. Because it is built to your wall, it fits the plumbing and the outlets exactly. Eduardo fabricates the quartz, granite or quartzite top in house.
Are heated floors worth it in Houston?
They cost less than people expect and they are used more than people expect. Tile floors feel cold in a Houston house at 68 degrees in January. HomeYou lists heated flooring as an add-on at $721 to $2,097 (2026). An electric mat goes under the tile, on its own circuit with a thermostat, and needs an electrical permit.
Do I need a permit for a master bathroom remodel in Houston?
Usually, yes. The City of Houston requires a plumbing permit for moved or added drains and supply lines, an electrical permit for new circuits such as a heated floor or added lighting, and a building permit if a wall moves. Cosmetic work such as a new vanity on the same plumbing does not. Kitchen Remodel Masters pulls the permits and schedules the inspections.
