- Walk-In Shower
A custom walk-in shower in Houston runs $5,920 to $11,830 according to Angi’s Houston page (angi.com, 2026), with high-end tile and frameless glass showers reaching $14,000 to $20,000 and up per This Old House (thisoldhouse.com, 2026). Kitchen Remodel Masters builds walk-in showers with a full waterproofing membrane, porcelain or large-format tile, a bench and niche, a linear or center drain, and frameless glass, usually in 1 to 2 weeks on site.
Walk-In Shower Layouts and Sizes
The layout is set by where the drain and the valve are today and how much floor you can give up.
- Alcove, 36 by 60 or 42 by 60. Three walls and one open side. This is what a standard tub leaves behind and the most common walk-in shower in Houston; Fixr (2025) calls it the typical tub-to-shower conversion layout.
- Corner, 36 by 36 to 48 by 48. Two tiled walls and two glass sides. The right choice in a small hall bath.
- Large alcove or walk-through, 48 by 60 to 60 by 72. Room for a bench, two showerheads and a niche wall. Common in master bathroom remodels in Memorial, River Oaks and Bellaire.
- Wet room. Shower and freestanding tub in one waterproofed zone behind a fixed panel. $11,000 to $22,000 per Fixr (2025).
We draw the layout in a free 3D design so you can see the glass line and the bench in your room.
Frameless Glass
Frameless glass is 3/8-inch or 1/2-inch tempered glass held by hinges and clips with no metal frame. It makes a small bathroom read larger and has no channel to trap soap film. Fixr (2025) prices a frameless door at $900 to $2,300 and a framed door at $300 to $1,200; This Old House (2026) lists a frameless enclosure at $1,000 to $3,000 installed.
Glass is measured after grout and installed 1 to 2 weeks later. A single fixed panel with no door costs less and works when the shower is at least 60 inches long.
Benches and Niches
A bench and a niche are framed before the waterproofing goes on, so they are decided in the design stage.
- Bench. A built-in corner or full-width bench, topped with the same quartz, granite or quartzite Eduardo fabricates for countertops, so there is no grout on the seat. Fixr (2025) prices a bench at $100 to $500; HomeYou lists bench installation at $650 to $1,783 (2026).
- Niche. A recessed shelf between the studs, lined with wall tile or stone. $100 to $400 each per Fixr (2025).
Linear Drains and Curbless Entries
A center drain needs the floor to slope from all four sides, which is why shower floors use small mosaic tile. A linear drain along one wall lets the floor slope one way, so large-format tile can run straight into the shower.
Linear drains are the standard for curbless showers. On a Houston slab a curbless floor means recessing the shower area into the concrete; on a wood floor, Fixr (2025) says curbless adds little. HomeYou lists drain installation at $422 to $1,403 (2026).
Tile Choices for Houston Humidity
Houston’s average relative humidity is about 75 percent (NOAA data via Wikipedia), so the shower is fighting the air even when it is dry.
- Porcelain tile. Absorbs under 0.5 percent water, available in 12 by 24, 24 by 48 and larger. Angi’s Houston page prices porcelain at $2 to $27 per square foot installed (2026). Our default for walls.
- Large-format tile and slabs. A 24-by-48 wall tile or a porcelain slab cuts grout lines by 80 percent or more compared to 3-by-6 subway tile, so there is less to clean and less for mold to grow in. Porcelain slab runs $10 to $30 per square foot (Angi Houston, 2026).
- Natural stone. Marble and quartzite are porous, and Houston’s hard water leaves a mineral film, so stone needs sealing every one to two years. $5 to $91 per square foot (Angi Houston, 2026).
- Grout. High-performance cement grout or epoxy grout, both of which resist staining and mold far better than standard sanded grout.
- Exhaust fan. At least 1 CFM per square foot, 50 CFM minimum, vented outside, on a timer that runs 20 minutes after each shower. An ENERGY STAR certified fan is quiet enough that people use it. About $400 installed with a light (Angi Houston bathroom remodel page, 2026).
Waterproofing
Tile and grout are not waterproof; the membrane behind them is. Kitchen Remodel Masters uses a sheet membrane such as Schluter KERDI or a liquid membrane such as RedGard over cement board or a foam backer, with a pre-sloped pan and a flanged drain tied into the membrane. The pan is flood-tested for 24 hours before tile goes down, and Samuel sends a photo of the test. This Old House (2026) prices the backer and waterproofing system at $800 to $1,500 installed.
Fixtures
- Thermostatic valve. Holds a set temperature and runs two outlets at once. A pressure-balance valve is the lower-cost option. This Old House (2026) prices a valve and trim kit at $500 to $1,200 installed.
- Rain head plus hand shower. The most requested combination: a rain head for soaking and a hand shower on a slide bar for rinsing the walls. HomeYou lists a rain head add-on at $175 to $721 and a hand shower at $159 to $695 (2026).
How Long Walk-In Shower Installation Takes
Most Kitchen Remodel Masters walk-in showers take 1 to 2 weeks in your bathroom: demo and plumbing rough-in in days 1 to 2, waterproofing and the flood test in days 3 to 4, tile and grout in days 5 to 8, fixtures and trim in days 9 to 10, then glass 1 to 2 weeks after grout.
Walk-In Shower Cost in Houston
In Houston, a custom walk-in shower runs $5,920 to $11,830 per Angi’s Houston page (angi.com, 2026). HomeYou lists a Texas range of $5,280 to $11,614 (homeyou.com, 2026). Fixr’s national range is $5,000 to $11,000, with prefab at $2,000 to $8,000 and custom at $5,000 to $20,000 (fixr.com, 2025). This Old House lists tiled installs at $8,000 to $13,000 and high-end custom at $14,000 to $20,000 and up (thisoldhouse.com, 2026).
| Size | Prefab | Custom tile | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 36 by 36 | $2,700 | $5,400 | Fixr, 2025 |
| 48 by 48 | $5,000 | $10,000 | Fixr, 2025 |
| 60 by 60 | $7,500 | $15,000 | Fixr, 2025 |
What moves the price: tile versus panels, frameless versus framed glass, a slab drain move, a curbless floor, a stone-topped bench, and a two-outlet thermostatic valve. Labor is 40 to 60 percent of the total (Fixr, 2025). Kitchen Remodel Masters does not publish a price list because the drain location, the tile and the glass change the number for every bathroom. Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a walk-in shower cost in Houston?
A custom walk-in shower in Houston runs $5,920 to $11,830 according to Angi's Houston page (2026). HomeYou lists a Texas range of $5,280 to $11,614 (2026), Fixr's national range is $5,000 to $11,000 with an $8,000 average (2025), and This Old House puts tiled installs at $8,000 to $13,000 and high-end custom at $14,000 to $20,000 and up (2026). Kitchen Remodel Masters prices each shower after a free in-home visit.
What is a good size for a walk-in shower?
A 36-by-36-inch shower is the practical minimum for one person. A 36-by-60 or 42-by-60 shower fits the alcove left by a standard tub and is the most common size in Houston conversions. A 48-by-48 or 60-by-60 shower has room for a bench and a second showerhead. Larger than that, a wet room with a fixed panel usually makes more sense than a door.
What is a frameless glass shower?
A frameless shower uses 3/8-inch or 1/2-inch tempered glass held by hinges and clips, with no metal frame around the panels. Fixr prices frameless doors at $900 to $2,300 and This Old House puts a frameless enclosure at $1,000 to $3,000 installed (2026). Framed doors cost less, $300 to $1,200 per Fixr, but the frame traps water and soap film.
How long does walk-in shower installation take?
Most Kitchen Remodel Masters walk-in showers take 1 to 2 weeks on site. Plumbing and waterproofing come first, then tile, then grout and sealer, and each stage cures before the next. Glass is measured after grout and usually installed 1 to 2 weeks later; a curtain rod works in the meantime.
What tile is best for a walk-in shower in Houston?
Porcelain. It absorbs almost no water, holds up to daily use, and comes in large-format sizes that cut the number of grout lines. Angi's Houston page prices porcelain tile at $2 to $27 per square foot and stone at $5 to $91 (2026). Natural stone needs sealing every year or two in Houston's hard water. On the floor, use a mosaic or textured tile so the surface slopes cleanly and stays grippy.
How do you keep mold out of a shower in Houston humidity?
Three things. First, a bonded waterproof membrane behind the tile so water never reaches the wall. Second, large-format tile and a high-performance or epoxy grout, which cut the grout lines where mold starts. Third, a properly sized exhaust fan on a timer. A bath fan should move at least 1 CFM per square foot of floor, 50 CFM minimum, and run 20 minutes after each shower.
What is a linear drain and do I need one?
A linear drain is a long, narrow drain set along one wall or across the entry instead of a round drain in the center. The floor slopes in one direction toward it, so large-format tile can be used on the shower floor and a curbless entry is possible. It costs more than a center drain but it is the standard choice for curbless and wet-room showers.
Do I need a permit to install a walk-in shower in Houston?
If the drain, the trap or the supply lines move, the City of Houston requires a plumbing permit and a rough-in inspection. Adding a circuit for a heated floor or a new light needs an electrical permit. Replacing a shower on the same drain and valve usually does not. Kitchen Remodel Masters checks every job with the Houston Permitting Center and pulls the permits.
