- How Long a Kitchen Remodel Takes
A kitchen remodel takes 2 to 4 weeks of construction when the layout stays the same and 4 to 8 weeks when a wall comes out, after 2 to 3 weeks of design, at Kitchen Remodel Masters in Houston. National guides quote 6 to 12 weeks for a full remodel (Fixr, 2025; Block Renovation, 2025) because they include waiting on cabinets from a supplier, a wait that an in-house cabinet shop removes.
This guide gives a timeline by project type, walks through each phase in order, lists what delays kitchen jobs in Houston, and covers how to live in the house while it happens.
Kitchen Remodel Timeline by Project Type
| Project | Construction time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Cabinet refinishing (paint or stain) | 4 to 7 days | Doors sprayed in our shop; counters stay |
| Cabinet refacing | 3 to 5 days on site | New doors built first, then installed |
| Countertop replacement | 1 to 2 weeks template to install | Install is usually one day |
| Cosmetic update (counters, backsplash, hardware, paint, lighting swap) | 1 to 2 weeks | No permit when the layout is unchanged |
| Full remodel, same layout | 2 to 4 weeks | New cabinets, counters, backsplash, flooring, same sink and range location |
| Layout change or wall removal | 4 to 8 weeks | Engineered beam, moved plumbing and electrical, permit and inspections |
| Kitchen addition | 8 to 16 weeks or more | Foundation, framing and roof before the kitchen |
Those are Kitchen Remodel Masters construction windows. For comparison, Fixr (January 2025) lists a cosmetic refresh at 1 to 2 weeks, a full remodel at 6 to 12 weeks, and structural or custom-cabinet projects at 3 to 8 months from start to finish. Thumbtack (2024) quotes 3 to 6 months overall, or 6 to 9 weeks by one contractor’s estimate. The difference between those national numbers and ours is mostly cabinet lead time, covered below.
The Phases of a Kitchen Remodel, in Order
Every full kitchen goes through the same steps. Some overlap; most cannot.
Design: 2 to 3 weeks
Sean Carmel measures the kitchen, and you get a free 3D design with the layout, cabinet style, counters, backsplash, flooring and lighting. One or two revision rounds and sample selection fit inside the window. Block Renovation (2025) puts design development at 2 to 6 weeks, and the 2020 U.S. Houzz and Home survey found homeowners spent 8.3 months planning a kitchen on average; the design phase is where most of that time goes when there is no designer driving it. See our kitchen design services page.
Ordering and permits: 1 to 3 weeks, overlapping
Once the proposal is signed, three things start at once: Jose begins building the cabinets in our shop, appliances and tile are ordered, and the permit application goes to the City of Houston if plumbing, electrical, gas or walls change. Residential remodel permit review is 1 to 15 business days per the Houston Permitting Center. Our guide to kitchen remodel permits in Houston covers what needs one.
Demolition: 1 to 3 days
Cabinets, counters, backsplash and flooring come out. Fixr (2025) allows 1 to 3 weeks for demolition; a kitchen without asbestos or hidden water damage takes days, not weeks. Houston homes from the Harvey era sometimes show old water damage at the toe kicks once cabinets come out, which can add a day or two of subfloor repair.
Rough-ins: 3 to 5 days
The plumber moves supply and drain lines, the electrician runs new circuits and lighting, and the gas line goes in if the range is moving. Fixr (2025) lists 2 to 4 days for electrical and plumbing. On Houston’s slab-on-grade foundations, a new island drain means cutting and patching the slab, which adds 1 to 2 days.
Inspections: 1 to 3 days each
Rough-in inspections for each trade have to pass before the walls close. The inspection is a scheduled date, so the crew works around it. A failed inspection means a correction and a reschedule.
Drywall, paint and flooring: 3 to 5 days
Walls are patched or replaced, primed and painted. Flooring goes in before cabinets when it runs under them, or after when it does not. Fixr (2025) gives flooring 1 to 3 days.
Cabinets: 2 to 3 days
The cabinets built in our shop are set, leveled and secured. Fixr (2025) lists 2 to 3 days for installation regardless of cabinet source; the difference is the wait before that day.
Countertops: 1 to 2 weeks from template to install
Eduardo templates the installed cabinets, fabricates the slab, and installs. The sink, faucet and cooktop are reconnected the same day or the next. This is the step that cannot be rushed, because templating needs the cabinets set first.
Backsplash, trim and finishes: 3 to 5 days
Tile goes in after the counters, then crown molding, light rail, hardware, plumbing fixtures, appliances and under-cabinet lighting.
Final inspections and punch list: 2 to 5 days
Final trade inspections, then the walkthrough with Samuel, our project manager, and a punch list of touch-ups. Before and after photos close the job. Our process page shows each step with the daily photo updates you receive.
What Delays Kitchen Remodels in Houston
- Supplier cabinet lead times. Stock cabinets take 1 to 2 weeks for delivery, semi-custom 4 to 8 weeks, and fully custom 3 to 6 months or longer, according to Fixr (2025); Block Renovation (2025) cites 8 to 12 weeks for custom. Kitchen Remodel Masters builds cabinets in its own shop on Washington Avenue, so the build runs during design and permit review instead of after.
- Appliances. Pro ranges and panel-ready refrigerators can carry long factory lead times. We order them the week the proposal is signed.
- Permits and inspections. The 1 to 15 business day review plus scheduled inspections. Complete drawings and an engineer’s beam design submitted on day one keep this at the short end.
- Slab plumbing. Moving a sink on a slab foundation means cutting concrete, running the new drain, and patching, which adds days and a plumbing inspection under the slab.
- Hurricane season. June 1 to November 30, peaking September 10 (NOAA National Hurricane Center). A storm week delays deliveries and inspections across the city.
- Decisions made late. Changing the tile or the island size after demolition restarts ordering. The 3D design exists to make those choices before the first cabinet is built.
- Hidden conditions. Old water damage, knob-and-tube or aluminum wiring in 1920s to 1960s bungalows in the Heights, Montrose and Bellaire, and undersized panels that need an upgrade before new circuits can be added.
How to Live Through a Kitchen Remodel
- Set up a temporary kitchen. Move the refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker and a toaster oven to the dining room or garage. Use the bathroom or laundry sink for dishes, or paper plates for 3 weeks.
- Plan the out-of-use window. In a 4 week remodel, the sink and range are gone from demolition until the counters are set, about 2 to 3 weeks. Cabinet refinishing and counter replacement keep the kitchen mostly usable.
- Seal the room. Plastic sheeting and a zipper door at the kitchen opening keep drywall and tile dust out of the rest of the house. The crew cleans up daily.
- Keep one path clear. Workers carry cabinets and slabs through the front door; a clear path protects your floors and their schedule.
- Schedule around your calendar. If you host Thanksgiving, start before mid-September or wait until January. The job needs about 6 to 8 weeks from signed proposal to finished kitchen for a same-layout remodel.
- Expect noise from 8 to 5. Demolition, slab cutting and tile saws are the loud days; most of the job is quieter.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a full kitchen remodel take?
Most Kitchen Remodel Masters full kitchens take 2 to 4 weeks of construction when the layout stays the same, and 4 to 8 weeks when a wall comes out or the layout changes, after 2 to 3 weeks of design. National guides run longer because they include supplier cabinet lead times: Fixr (2025) puts a full remodel at 6 to 12 weeks and Block Renovation (2025) at 6 to 12 weeks once construction starts.
How long does a kitchen remodel take from start to finish, including planning?
Including design, ordering and permits, plan on 2 to 3 months for a same-layout kitchen and 3 to 5 months for a layout change or addition. The 2020 U.S. Houzz and Home survey found homeowners averaged 8.3 months of planning and 4.5 months of construction for kitchens, which shows how much time goes to decisions rather than work. A finished 3D design before the proposal is what shortens it.
Why do kitchen remodels take so long?
Three reasons: waiting on materials, waiting on inspections, and trades that cannot overlap. Custom cabinets from an outside supplier take 8 to 12 weeks per Block Renovation (2025) and 3 to 6 months per Fixr (2025). Countertops cannot be templated until the cabinets are set, then take 1 to 2 weeks to install. Rough-in inspections have to pass before drywall closes. Each wait sits on the critical path.
How long does it take to refinish kitchen cabinets?
Cabinet painting takes 4 to 7 days on site at Kitchen Remodel Masters, with the doors sprayed in our shop. Refacing takes 3 to 5 days once the new doors are built. Both keep the kitchen usable for most of the job because the countertops and sink stay in place.
How long does it take to replace kitchen countertops?
From template to install, 1 to 2 weeks. Eduardo templates the cabinets, fabricates the slab in our shop, and installs. Install day itself is usually one day, with the sink and faucet reconnected the same day or the next. Fixr (2025) lists 2 days to 1 week for the countertop step after cabinets in a full remodel.
How long is a kitchen out of use during a remodel?
For a full remodel, the sink and range are out from demolition until the countertops are set and plumbing is reconnected, usually 2 to 3 weeks of a 4 week job. Cabinet refinishing and countertop replacement keep the kitchen mostly usable. We set up a temporary kitchen spot with the refrigerator, microwave and a utility sink or bathroom sink for dishes.
Does hurricane season affect kitchen remodel timelines in Houston?
It can. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 with a peak around September 10 according to NOAA's National Hurricane Center. A storm can delay material deliveries and inspections for a week or more. Scheduling demolition outside the August to September peak, or keeping materials on site before it, avoids most of the risk.
How long does a kitchen addition take?
Longer than any remodel inside the existing walls: typically 8 to 16 weeks of construction after permits, because the foundation, framing, roof and exterior have to be built before the kitchen itself. Fixr (2025) puts projects with structural changes at 3 to 8 months from start to finish. Permit review in Houston runs 1 to 15 business days and additions use more of that window.
