A few streets from our office in the Washington Avenue corridor, this covered patio got the most photographed outdoor kitchen we have built: a grill island with a backlit onyx countertop. The onyx slab is translucent, so an LED panel underneath turns the whole counter into a lamp after dark. Underneath, a dark-stained wood base holds a built-in stainless grill, a side burner, an outdoor refrigerator and stainless doors.

What makes this one different
- Onyx countertop. A natural stone with orange, amber and white banding, cut and set by Eduardo’s team over an LED light panel. It is a showpiece counter, not a chopping surface, and it lives under the patio roof.
- Full appliance package. Stainless gas grill, side burner, outdoor fridge and access doors, built into one island so the cooking and the storage are in one place.
- Dark wood base. Stained to contrast with the glowing stone and the stainless.
If you want something nobody on your street has, this is the kind of project to bring to the free consultation. For the more common choices, read about outdoor kitchen countertops that hold up in Houston and see our outdoor kitchen page.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the glowing countertop?
Onyx, a translucent natural stone, with LED lighting underneath. Onyx lets light through, so a lit panel under the slab makes the whole counter glow orange and white at night.
Is onyx practical for an outdoor kitchen?
Onyx is softer than granite and needs sealing, so it is a statement counter rather than a work surface. On this project it sits under a covered patio, and the grill and burner do the cooking while the onyx gives the space its look.
What appliances are built in?
A built-in stainless gas grill, a side burner, an outdoor refrigerator and stainless access doors, all set into a dark-stained wood base.
Can you source a slab like this?
Yes. Eduardo's team selects and fabricates specialty slabs including onyx, quartzite and marble. Bring your idea to the free consultation and Sean will show you what is available.
