Ashwin and his family wanted a real outdoor kitchen on the back patio of their Cypress home, with a grill, a burner, a sink and a place to sit. Kitchen Remodel Masters Houston tiled the patio with a patterned porcelain tile, built an L-shaped island in block and brick, painted it white to match the house, and set black granite countertops with a built-in grill, a side burner, an undermount sink and stainless doors.
Finished outdoor kitchen
How it was built
- Tile first. The patterned porcelain tile went down over the slab before any brick was laid, so there is no bare concrete around the island.
- Block and brick base. Concrete block inside, brick outside, with every appliance opening framed in before the countertop template. Brick does not rot, rust or warp in Cypress humidity. More on custom grill islands.
- Black granite counters. Templated after the base was set and fabricated by Eduardo’s team. Granite is our first choice for an uncovered outdoor kitchen because standard quartz fades and yellows in direct sun. See which countertops work outdoors in Houston.
- Appliances. Stainless gas grill, side burner with a griddle plate, undermount sink with a black pull-down faucet, stainless access doors and a bar overhang for stools on the short leg of the L.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the countertop on this outdoor kitchen?
Black granite. Granite is one of the few countertops that holds up in full Houston sun without fading, which matters here because the kitchen sits on an open patio with no roof over the island.
What is the base built from?
Concrete block and brick laid on the patio slab, then painted white to match the house. The openings for the grill, side burner, sink and doors were framed into the brick before the countertop was templated.
What appliances are built in?
A stainless built-in gas grill, a side burner with a griddle plate, an undermount outdoor sink with a black pull-down faucet, and stainless access doors with storage underneath.
Did you tile the patio?
Yes. A patterned porcelain tile went down over the slab before the island was built, so the kitchen sits on a finished floor instead of bare concrete.
