In Houston, an outdoor kitchen usually runs $7,000 to $15,000 for a basic built-in grill island, $15,000 to $30,000 for a mid-range layout with a sink, refrigerator and stone counters, and $30,000 to $50,000 or more for a full kitchen under a cover with a bar or pizza oven, according to One Stop Outdoor Construction (2026), Master Remodelers (2026) and HomeAdvisor (2026). Per linear foot of island, that works out to about $1,000 to $2,500 installed with appliances.
Those are Houston market ranges from published cost guides and local builders, not a Kitchen Remodel Masters quote. Outdoor kitchens vary more than indoor ones because the appliance list is open-ended, and because gas, water and power have to reach the backyard. This page breaks the number into tiers, then into line items, so you can see where your money goes.
Three tiers cover most Houston backyards. The square-foot numbers are the island footprint plus the work area around it.
| Tier | What you get | Houston installed range | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic grill island | 6 to 8 ft straight island, built-in gas grill, stone or stucco veneer, granite top, one or two doors; usually under an existing cover | $7,000 to $15,000 | One Stop Outdoor Construction 2026; Master Remodelers 2026; Angi 2026 lists small setups at $4,000 to $10,000 |
| Mid-range | 10 to 12 ft L-shape, grill, side burner, sink, outdoor fridge, stone counters, gas line, electrical and plumbing | $15,000 to $30,000 | One Stop Outdoor Construction 2026; Master Remodelers 2026 ($15,000 to $25,000); Angi 2026 ($10,000 to $20,000) |
| Full kitchen with cover | U-shape or long L, grill, smoker or pizza oven, fridge, ice maker, bar seating, lighting, under a new patio cover | $30,000 to $50,000 and up | One Stop Outdoor Construction 2026; Master Remodelers 2026 ($25,000 to $70,000); Fixr 2025 high end $65,000 |
For context, the national average is about $16,000 with a typical range of $6,000 to $30,000 (Fixr 2025), and HomeAdvisor (2026) puts it at $6,304 to $27,087, averaging $16,533. Per square foot, Fixr lists $40 to $130 and HomeAdvisor $33 to $130. Houston’s numbers sit inside those ranges; the difference is which tier you choose.
Builders often quote islands by the linear foot because the length sets how much framing, veneer and countertop you need. Houston islands run about $1,000 to $1,800 per linear foot for a basic grill-only run and $1,500 to $2,500 per linear foot for a mid-range L-shape, appliances included (One Stop Outdoor Construction 2026).
Broken into parts: framing and cabinet structure is $100 to $300 per linear foot (Fixr 2025) or $200 to $800 per linear foot depending on material (HomeAdvisor 2026). A built-in BBQ surround with counters around a grill runs $400 to $600 per linear foot (Fixr 2025). Countertop, appliances, utilities and finish make up the rest.
Every quote should show these as separate lines. Here are the market ranges for each.
The grill is the single biggest appliance. Built-in gas grills run $500 for basic models to $5,000 for commercial-grade units (Pergola Builder Houston 2026); HomeAdvisor (2026) lists $100 to $5,000. A 32 inch stainless built-in from a mid-range brand is about $1,800 to $3,500 (One Stop Outdoor Construction 2026). Buy 304 stainless, not 430; 430 rusts in Houston humidity within a few seasons.
The island is a frame (steel studs, concrete block or a prefab frame kit) wrapped in cement board and finished in stone veneer, stucco or brick. Framing runs $100 to $300 per linear foot (Fixr 2025), and HomeAdvisor (2026) lists $200 to $800 per linear foot depending on the material. Stone veneer costs more than stucco; a brick island matched to the house costs more than both.
Outdoor countertops average $15 to $185 per square foot (HomeAdvisor 2026). Granite is the common Houston choice at $60 to $100 per square foot outdoors, compared with $30 to $50 for concrete (Pergola Builder Houston 2026). A 10 foot L-shaped island has about 25 to 30 square feet of top, so $1,500 to $3,000 in granite. Kitchen Remodel Masters fabricates outdoor tops in its own shop, the same way it does indoor countertops.
A natural gas line from the house meter to the island costs $15 to $50 or more per linear foot (HomeGuide 2026). A 40 foot run is $600 to $2,000 plus the City of Houston gas permit and pressure test. Propane avoids the line but means swapping tanks.
Running a circuit for the fridge, lights and outlets costs about $500, plus $50 to $100 per fixture or outlet; larger kitchens can pass $1,500 (Fixr 2025). HomeGuide (2026) lists $4 to $9 per square foot for wiring. Outdoor outlets must be GFCI and in weatherproof covers.
Running water and a drain to the island costs $300 to $1,500, about $500 on average, plus about $300 to install the sink and $200 to $700 for the sink itself (Fixr 2025). HomeAdvisor (2026) lists outdoor sinks at $215 to $630. On a Houston slab-on-grade foundation, the drain is the expensive part if the island is far from the house.
Outdoor-rated refrigerators run $800 to $3,000 (Pergola Builder Houston 2026); HomeAdvisor (2026) lists $400 to $4,000. Pizza ovens are $2,000 to $6,000 (Pergola Builder Houston 2026), and built-in masonry ovens can reach $14,000 (Fixr 2025). Ice makers run $300 to $2,000 (HomeAdvisor 2026). Each appliance also needs its own cutout in the island and, usually, its own outlet.
If there is no cover yet, a pergola runs $1,500 to $15,000 and a full roofed structure $5,000 to $25,000 (Fixr 2025). Fixr’s covered patio guide puts an outdoor kitchen under a cover at $7,000 to $20,000 for the kitchen portion. Our patio cover page covers the cover itself, and the Bellaire patio cover and outdoor kitchen project shows both built together.
If the kitchen sits on grass or old cracked concrete, add a slab or pavers. Stone pavers run $3 to $30 per square foot and patio construction $5 to $50 per square foot (Fixr 2025). A 200 square foot pad is $1,000 to $6,000.
Houston is hard on outdoor kitchens: 90 percent humidity, 100 degree afternoons, salt air on the south side of town, and 50 inches of rain a year. The materials below are what survive it.
The island itself is not permitted work, but what feeds it is. City of Houston permits are required for plumbing, electrical and gas work. Your builder pulls the trade permits and schedules the inspections before the island is closed up. Permit costs for an outdoor kitchen run $150 to $500 in most cities (Fixr 2025), and HomeAdvisor (2026) says to budget $250 to $2,000 on large projects. The Houston Permitting Center lists permit requirements and exemptions on its residential plan review page.
Two more checks before you build. Many Houston neighborhoods, especially in Katy, Sugar Land and The Woodlands, have deed restrictions or an HOA that must approve the structure and the cover. And keep open flames at least 10 feet from siding or other combustible materials (HomeAdvisor 2026).
An uncovered island costs less up front, but in Houston it costs more over time. Sun fades stone sealers and stainless finishes, afternoon storms get into appliance housings, and the kitchen is unusable from noon to six in July. A cover adds $5,000 to $20,000 depending on size and type (Fixr 2025) and extends the season to most of the year.
If the budget only covers one this year, Houston builders usually recommend the cover first, then the kitchen under it. See the Bellaire patio cover and outdoor kitchen project and the West 42nd Street outdoor kitchen in the Garden Oaks area for two finished examples.
Houston scheduling note: hurricane season runs June through November, and summer afternoon storms stop exterior work. Spring and fall are the fastest build windows.
A complete Houston outdoor kitchen quote should list:
Usually extra: furniture, a fire pit, a TV and its wiring, landscaping repair, and HOA application fees.
Published ranges tell you what tier you are in. The exact number depends on your island length, your appliance list and how far gas, water and power have to travel. Houston outdoor kitchens run $7,000 to $15,000 for a basic built-in grill island, $15,000 to $30,000 for a mid-range layout with a sink, fridge and stone counters, and $30,000 to $50,000 or more for a full kitchen under a cover (One Stop Outdoor Construction 2026, Master Remodelers 2026). National averages are about $16,000 to $16,500 (Fixr 2025, HomeAdvisor 2026).
A built-in grill island with storage and a stone counter runs $3,000 to $10,000 installed for the island itself (HomeGuide 2026), and a basic 6 to 8 foot Houston island with a grill runs $7,000 to $15,000 all in (One Stop Outdoor Construction 2026). The grill adds $500 to $5,000 depending on brand and size (Pergola Builder Houston 2026).
Houston islands run about $1,000 to $1,800 per linear foot for a basic grill-only run and $1,500 to $2,500 per linear foot for a mid-range L-shape with sink and fridge, appliances included (One Stop Outdoor Construction 2026). Framing alone is $100 to $800 per linear foot (Fixr 2025, HomeAdvisor 2026).
The island itself does not, but the gas line, the electrical circuit and the sink plumbing do. City of Houston permits are required for plumbing, electrical and gas work. Permits for a full outdoor kitchen typically cost $150 to $500 (Fixr 2025) and can reach $2,000 on large projects (HomeAdvisor 2026). Deed restrictions and HOA approval are separate from the city permit.
Standard quartz should not go outdoors in Houston. Cambria's product specification sheet states its quartz is not approved for outdoor use, and most brands say the same because UV light yellows the resin. Granite, quartzite and porcelain are the materials that hold up under a Houston patio cover.
In Houston, yes. Sun fades finishes, afternoon storms rust unprotected hardware, and a cover lets you cook from June to September. A patio cover adds $5,000 to $20,000 depending on size and type (Fixr 2025), and it also protects the appliances, which are the most expensive part of the kitchen.
A basic island is usually a week or two of construction once materials are on site. A mid-range kitchen with gas, electrical and plumbing takes 2 to 3 weeks, plus inspections. If a new patio cover and slab are part of the project, add 2 to 4 weeks for the cover before the kitchen goes in.
A prefab grill island starts around $1,400 to $5,000 (Fixr 2025), but it is a freestanding unit, not a built kitchen. The next step up is a basic built island under an existing patio cover with a propane grill and no sink, which avoids the gas, plumbing and electrical permits. Houston builders quote that from about $5,000 to $7,000 (Pergola Builder Houston 2026, One Stop Outdoor Construction 2026).
Granite is the most common because it handles heat and sun and costs $60 to $100 per square foot outdoors (Pergola Builder Houston 2026). Porcelain is the most UV-stable and does not need sealing. Quartzite works well under a cover. Avoid standard quartz, marble, butcher block and laminate outdoors.
There is no reliable Houston resale number, so treat the outdoor kitchen as a lifestyle purchase. What holds value is durable construction: 304 stainless appliances, a sealed stone or stucco island, a stone or porcelain top, and a cover. Those are also the items that do not need to be replaced after a few Houston summers.
