Cabinet painting in Houston is the fastest way to change a kitchen without changing the kitchen. Kitchen Remodel Masters degreases, sands, fills, primes and sprays your existing cabinets in a finish made for cabinet doors, and most kitchens are back together in 4 to 7 days. Doors and drawer fronts go to our shop on Washington Avenue; the boxes are sprayed in place.
This page explains who cabinet painting is right for, how we do it, what Houston homeowners are choosing for color, how long it takes, and what it costs in the Houston market.
Cabinet painting keeps the cabinet boxes, doors and drawers you have and gives them a new sprayed color. Nothing is replaced unless a door is damaged. The layout stays the same, the countertops stay in place, and there is no demolition.
It is the right choice when:
It is the wrong choice when the boxes are water damaged, the doors are peeling thermofoil, or you want to change the layout. In those cases the money belongs in refacing or custom cabinets.
The most common cabinet painting job in Houston is a 1990s or 2000s builder kitchen in Katy, Sugar Land, Spring or Cypress with honey-oak or orange-maple doors. The cabinets are well built. Only the color is 25 years old.
Our cabinet work is done in-house. Jose, our cabinet maker, has built and finished cabinets for 20 years and runs the shop where your doors are sprayed. These are the steps on every job.
Kitchen cabinets carry years of cooking oil, and paint will not bond to it. Every surface is washed with a degreaser and rinsed. Each door, drawer front and hinge is numbered so it goes back on the same opening.
Factory finishes are slick. We scuff sand every surface so the primer has something to grip. Loose hinges, chipped corners and cracked panels are repaired before any finish goes on.
Oak has open grain that telegraphs through paint. On oak doors we apply grain filler, let it set, and sand it flat. This is the step most cheap quotes skip, and it is the difference between a smooth door and one that still looks like oak with paint on it.
A bonding primer is sprayed on every piece. On laminate or thermofoil we use two primer coats.
Doors and drawer fronts are sprayed flat in our shop, both sides, with sanding between coats. The boxes are masked and sprayed in your kitchen. We use a sprayed waterborne enamel or a conversion varnish, depending on the job. Both are cabinet-grade finishes. Conversion varnish is the harder of the two and the closest match to a factory finish. Wall paint is never used on cabinets.
Houston’s average relative humidity is about 75 percent (NOAA data via Wikipedia). Water-based finishes dry by evaporation, and humid air slows that down. Doors cure in our conditioned shop, not in a garage. We allow the extra cure time before reinstall instead of hanging soft doors that stick to the frames.
Doors are rehung on the original openings, hinges adjusted, and new hardware drilled if the hole pattern changes. The kitchen is cleaned before we leave each day.
The colors we spray most often in Houston kitchens:
Sean brings color samples to the free consultation and the 3D design shows the color in your kitchen before anything is sprayed. You can preview whites and neutrals on the Sherwin-Williams color collections page.
Most Kitchen Remodel Masters cabinet painting projects take 4 to 7 days.
You can use the kitchen through most of it. Counters and appliances are masked during spraying and uncovered at the end of each day. In July and August, plan on the longer end of the range so the finish is fully hard before the doors go back on.
In Houston, professional cabinet painting usually runs $3,500 to $8,000 for a full kitchen with a sprayed finish, according to Fresh Coat Painters of West Houston (freshcoatpainters.com, 2026). Fixr’s national range is $2,500 to $6,500 with a $4,000 average (fixr.com, 2026). Angi’s Houston page lists $30 to $60 per linear foot (angi.com, 2026), which describes lighter brush-and-roll work rather than a sprayed full kitchen.
Three things move the price: door and drawer count, how much prep the old finish needs (grain filling on oak is the big one), and whether the painter brushes in place or sprays. Kitchen Remodel Masters does not publish a price list because two kitchens with the same door count can need very different prep. The full breakdown by kitchen size, per door and per linear foot is on our cost to paint kitchen cabinets in Houston page.
| Option | What changes | Houston cost range | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Painting | New sprayed color on existing doors and boxes | $3,500 to $8,000 (sprayed full kitchen) | Fresh Coat West Houston, 2026 |
| Refacing | New doors and drawer fronts, new veneer on boxes | $3,579 to $8,998, average $6,080 | Angi Houston, 2026 |
| Replacing | New cabinets, layout can change | $15,000 to $35,000 | Fresh Coat West Houston, 2026 |
Painting is the least expensive option when the boxes and doors are sound. Refacing makes sense when the boxes are sound but the doors are the wrong style or damaged. Replacing makes sense when the boxes are damaged or the layout has to change. Staining is the fourth path when the cabinets are real wood and you want to keep the grain. Our guide on whether to paint, stain, reface or replace cabinets walks through the decision in detail.
A sprayed finish looks like a new factory door. No brush marks, no roller texture, an even sheen across every door and box. On oak with filled grain the doors are smooth to the touch.
What painting does not do: it does not fix a layout, hide a damaged box or change the door style. If the door style is the problem, refacing is the answer.
Our cabinet refinishing and granite countertop project shows a Houston kitchen with sprayed cabinets paired with new counters. Painting cabinets and replacing countertops in the same week is a common combination because the doors are already off and the kitchen is already masked.
Kitchen Remodel Masters prices cabinet painting after a free in-home visit. Sean counts the doors, checks the boxes for water damage, looks at the wood species and tells you whether paint, stain, refacing or new cabinets makes sense. The consultation and the 3D design are free. Call (713) 364-6603 or request your free consultation.
Most Kitchen Remodel Masters cabinet painting projects take 4 to 7 days. Doors and drawer fronts are sprayed in our shop while the boxes are prepped and sprayed in your kitchen. Humid weather can add a day of cure time before reinstall.

We spray. Doors and drawer fronts are sprayed flat in our shop, both sides. The boxes are masked and sprayed in place. Spraying leaves no brush marks and lays down an even film that looks like a factory finish.
Yes. Oak has open grain that shows through paint unless it is filled first. We apply grain filler, sand it smooth, then prime. It adds a day or two on a typical 1990s honey-oak kitchen and gives a smooth, grain-free door.
A sprayed waterborne enamel or a conversion varnish, depending on the job. Both are made for cabinets, not walls. Conversion varnish is the harder, more chemical-resistant finish and is the closest match to a new factory door.
Yes. Houston's average relative humidity is about 75 percent (NOAA data via Wikipedia). Water-based finishes dry by evaporation, so humid air slows cure. We spray doors in a conditioned shop and allow extra cure time before reinstall so the finish does not stay soft or tacky.
Mostly yes. Counters, the sink and appliances are masked during spraying and uncovered at the end of each day. Doors are off for most of the week. Treat the finish gently for the first two weeks while it hardens.
Not if the prep is right. Peeling comes from paint applied over grease or a slick factory finish. We degrease, scuff sand, fill, prime with a bonding primer, then spray two finish coats. A proper sprayed finish holds up to daily use for many years.
