Quartzite countertops in Houston run about $75 to $130 per square foot installed (Sugar Land Stone 2025), with national guides listing $60 to $210 (SlabWise 2026, Fixr 2025). Kitchen Remodel Masters cuts and polishes quartzite in its own Houston shop, which matters with this stone more than any other because it is the hardest slab a fabricator will ever put on a saw.

Below: what quartzite is, why it gets confused with quartz, the slabs Houston homeowners ask for by name, sealing, heat, the “soft quartzite” story, and cost. One finished kitchen is in the flat panel cabinets with quartzite countertops project.

What quartzite countertops are

Quartzite is a natural metamorphic rock. It began as sand, hardened into sandstone, then spent a long time buried under enough heat and pressure to fuse the grains into solid quartz. The Natural Stone Institute’s Use Natural Stone guide rates it a 7 on the Mohs scale, harder than granite and about twice as hard as marble.

The slabs come out of the ground, mostly in Brazil, and are cut and polished like granite. Nothing is added. Quartzite does not scratch under a knife, does not scorch under a pan, and does not etch from lemon juice, and its soft veining is often mistaken for marble.

Quartzite vs quartz: the name problem

Quartzite and quartz share a word and nothing else. Quartz is engineered, about 90 percent ground quartz in resin. Quartzite is a rock.

Quartzite Quartz
Made of Natural metamorphic stone Ground quartz plus resin
Hot pan Fine (Fixr 2025) Trivet needed, about 300 degrees Fahrenheit limit (MSI)
Sealing Yes, 1 to 3 years (SlabWise 2026) Never
Outdoor use Yes, under cover No (Cambria spec sheet)
Pattern Unique per slab Repeats slab to slab
Houston installed cost $75 to $130 per sq ft (Sugar Land Stone 2025) $50 to $150 per sq ft (SlabWise 2026)

A slab with a brand name like Cambria or Silestone is engineered quartz. A slab sold by a quarry name like Taj Mahal or Sea Pearl is quartzite. The engineered product is covered on the quartz countertops in Houston page.

Material prices below are slab only, per square foot, and vary by lot.

  • Taj Mahal. Cream background, soft gold and taupe veins, the most requested quartzite in Houston. Fixr (2025) lists $90 to $110 material; SlabWise (2026) lists $55 to $90. Dense, low porosity, needs little sealing.
  • Sea Pearl. Gray-green with white movement. Fixr (2025) lists $90 to $100; SlabWise (2026) lists $40 to $65. Also dense.
  • White Macaubas and Calacatta Macaubas. Bright white with straight gray or gold lines. SlabWise (2026) lists White Macaubas at $28 to $45 and Calacatta Macaubas at $70 to $110. Both are more porous than Taj Mahal and should be sealed at install.
  • Fantasy Brown. Sold as quartzite in most Houston yards, but it is not. The Natural Stone Institute’s guide describes it as folded layers of marble and quartzite and says to treat it as marble, because the marble layers etch. Super White has the same issue.

Before you buy, test a sample from the actual slab with a glass tile and a drop of vinegar; we do this with you at the yard. Real quartzite scratches the glass and ignores the vinegar.

Sealing and daily care

Quartzite is porous, so it gets a penetrating sealer at installation. SlabWise (2026) puts resealing at every 1 to 3 years depending on density. Water test: if a drop darkens the stone within 10 minutes, reseal.

Daily care is warm water and a drop of dish soap. The Natural Stone Institute’s care page says to skip acidic cleaners even on siliceous stone like quartzite, since some slabs carry trace minerals that react, and to skip abrasive powders. Houston tap water leaves a white mineral film near the sink on dark polished stone; a neutral stone cleaner removes it.

Heat, etching and the “soft quartzite” story

Heat. Quartzite takes a hot pan. Fixr (2025) states it resists heat damage where quartz can melt slightly. KRM still suggests a trivet under cast iron straight off a burner, since a sudden hot spot near a sink cutout can stress any natural stone.

Etching. True quartzite does not etch from kitchen acids. Use Natural Stone’s guide puts it plainly: there is no such thing as soft quartzite. A slab that etches was marble all along, usually a dolomitic marble with a quartzite label. That is the whole source of the “quartzite etched on me” stories online.

Quartzite in a Houston outdoor kitchen

Quartzite works outdoors under a cover. It has no resin, so the sun cannot yellow it, which is what rules standard quartz out (Cambria’s product specification sheet). For an outdoor kitchen under a patio cover, KRM uses granite, quartzite or porcelain. Keep the stone out of standing rain, reseal yearly, and choose a light color; a dark polished slab in Houston afternoon sun gets too hot to touch.

Why quartzite costs more to fabricate

A quartzite slab is not just pricier at the yard. It costs more to cut. SlabWise (2026) calls it among the toughest materials a shop will handle and notes it wears through diamond blades faster than granite. Sugar Land Stone (2025) says the same about Houston shops: it wears blades faster and slows fabrication.

That is why Eduardo, KRM’s countertop fabricator with 15 years in the trade, cuts quartzite on the shop’s own saw with fresh blades and slower feed rates. Sink and cooktop cutouts, mitered waterfall edges and full-height slab backsplashes are all done in-house. A shop that quotes quartzite at granite’s rate is rushing the cut or eating the blade cost, and the edges show it.

What quartzite countertops cost in Houston

In Houston, quartzite countertops usually run $75 to $130 per square foot installed, with rare veined slabs like Taj Mahal at the top (Sugar Land Stone, 2025). SlabWise (July 2026) lists $60 to $200 nationally with most kitchens at $80 to $140, broken into $30 to $120 for the slab, $25 to $55 for fabrication and $5 to $15 for delivery and installation. Fixr (August 2025) lists $80 to $210 installed with material at $50 to $120.

For a typical 40 to 60 square foot Houston kitchen that is roughly $3,500 to $7,500 installed. Sugar Land Stone (2025) puts Houston granite at $45 to $75 installed, so quartzite is a $1,500 to $3,000 step up on the same kitchen. Published ranges, not a KRM quote. The line items are compared in the countertop replacement cost guide and the stone choice in quartz vs granite countertops.

Quartzite is one of the materials under countertop replacement in Houston. In a full kitchen remodel in Houston, including Memorial and Memorial Villages kitchens, the counters go in during the final week of the 2 to 4 week build, installed and sealed in one day. Granite countertops in Houston is the lower-cost natural stone. Financing through Synchrony is available.
