Marble countertops in Houston run about $50 to $200 per square foot installed, with most Carrara kitchens near $100 (Fixr 2026, SlabWise 2026). Kitchen Remodel Masters fabricates marble in its own Houston shop and installs it where it belongs: an island showpiece, a baking station, a bathroom vanity, or a full kitchen for an owner who has decided the patina is worth it.
This is an honest look at marble. It etches, it stains, and it needs sealing a few times a year. It is also the only stone that looks like marble. Below: pros and cons, Carrara vs Calacatta vs Statuario, honed vs polished, care in a Houston house, the look-alikes, and cost.
What marble is and why it behaves the way it does
Marble is limestone that was buried and recrystallized. It is calcium carbonate, the same chemistry as a seashell, which is why it reacts with acid. SlabWise (2026) rates marble at 3 to 5 on the Mohs scale, against 6 to 6.5 for granite and 7 for quartzite. A steel knife will scratch it.
None of that is a defect. Marble has been the bakery surface of Europe for centuries because it stays cool and flat. It just asks for different habits than granite or quartz.
Marble countertops: pros and cons
What marble does well
- The look. White marble with gray or gold veins is the surface every quartz and porcelain brand is copying. The real thing has depth that a printed pattern does not.
- Stays cool. Pastry dough and chocolate behave on marble.
- Fabricates cleanly. It takes fine ogee edges and tight inside corners that are hard to cut in quartzite.
- Ages well. A honed marble counter in a 1920s Montrose or Heights bungalow looks right in a way no engineered slab does.
What marble does badly
- Etching. Lemon, vinegar, wine, tomato and soda leave dull marks; lemon juice in about 30 seconds (SlabWise 2026).
- Staining. Oil, coffee and red wine soak into unsealed marble within 5 to 15 minutes (SlabWise 2026).
- Scratching. Keys, a dragged pot or a knife will mark it.
- Sealing. Every 3 to 4 months in a kitchen (SlabWise 2026).
If the cons are deal-breakers, pick one of the look-alikes below. If they read as “that is what marble is,” marble is for you.
Where marble makes sense in a Houston kitchen
KRM puts marble in four places:
- A baking station. A 3 to 6 foot section of honed marble next to the oven, with quartz or quartzite on the rest of the perimeter.
- The island as a showpiece. One bookmatched Calacatta slab with a mitered waterfall edge, and a tougher stone on the work perimeter where the lemons get squeezed.
- Bathrooms. A vanity sees no citrus or wine. Marble on a master bath counter, shower bench and curb is low risk.
- Full luxury kitchens. In River Oaks, Memorial and the Heights, some owners want the whole kitchen in Calacatta or Statuario and accept the care. KRM builds those and says up front what the first year looks like.
Carrara vs Calacatta vs Statuario
All three are quarried around Carrara, Italy. The names describe look and rarity, which set the price.
| Marble | Look | Installed cost per sq ft (SlabWise 2026) | Material only (Fixr 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carrara | Soft gray-white, fine feathery gray veins | $75 to $120 | $40 to $100 |
| Statuario | Bright white, fewer but dramatic gray veins | $130 to $200 | $50 to $200 |
| Calacatta | Whitest background, bold wide gray or gold veins | $150 to $250 and up | $175 to $400 |
Carrara is the volume stone and the cheapest. Calacatta comes from smaller quarries with more variable slabs, so each slab is priced on its own. For a bookmatched island, two sequential slabs from the same block are needed so the veins mirror at the seam. Dolomitic marbles like Fantasy Brown and Super White are often sold as quartzite; they etch more slowly than Carrara but still etch (SlabWise 2026).
Honed vs polished
Honed is matte. It hides etches, because an etch is itself a matte spot, and it hides water spots. Bob Vila (2023) lists honing at $10 to $20 per square foot extra. Honed is the right finish for a working kitchen counter.
Polished is glossy. Every etch shows as a dull patch in the shine. Polished resists staining slightly better, since polishing tightens the pores (SlabWise 2026). Use it on a vanity or a low-traffic island.
Sealing and care in a Houston home
Sealing. A penetrating sealer slows staining but does nothing against etching. SlabWise (2026) puts kitchen resealing at every 3 to 4 months; Fixr (2026) at one to two times a year. Reseal when water drops stop beading.
Cleaning. The Natural Stone Institute’s consumer care page says to use a neutral cleaner or mild dish soap with warm water and to avoid anything with lemon, vinegar or other acids, scouring powders and rust removers. Coasters under glasses, trivets under hot pans.
Humidity. Houston humidity is not a marble problem. Marble does not swell or move.
Hard water. This is the Houston issue. Tap water leaves a chalky mineral film around the faucet, and the usual fixes, vinegar or a lime remover, etch marble on contact. Use a marble-safe cleaner and dry the sink area after use.
Repairs. Light etches on honed marble come out with polishing powder. Deeper etches on polished marble need a professional re-polish, $3 to $8 per square foot (SlabWise 2026). Stains lift with a poultice.
Alternatives that look like marble
- Quartz. Calacatta-pattern quartz never etches and never needs sealing, at $50 to $150 per square foot installed (SlabWise 2026). It needs a trivet. See quartz countertops in Houston.
- Porcelain. A printed marble pattern on a slab that ignores acid, heat and sun, $55 to $120 installed (Fixr 2025, SlabWise 2026).
- Quartzite. Real stone with real veins and no etching. Taj Mahal and Calacatta Macaubas are the marble look-alikes, $75 to $130 installed in Houston (Sugar Land Stone 2025).
- Granite. White granites give light counters with less care. See granite countertops in Houston.
What marble countertops cost in Houston
In Houston, marble countertops usually run $50 to $200 per square foot installed with an average around $100, of which labor is $10 to $30 (Fixr, January 2026). SlabWise (March 2026) lists installed Carrara at $75 to $120, Statuario at $130 to $200 and Calacatta at $150 to $250 and up. Bob Vila (2023), citing HomeAdvisor, gives $40 to $100 per square foot with a $60 average.
For a typical 40 square foot Houston kitchen that is about $3,000 to $5,000 in Carrara and $6,000 to $10,000 in Calacatta, before a honed finish ($10 to $20 per square foot, Bob Vila 2023) or a bookmatched waterfall island. A 12 square foot marble baking station inside a quartz kitchen adds roughly $1,000 to $1,500. Market ranges, not a KRM quote. Every material is compared in the countertop replacement cost guide and the stone decision in quartz vs granite countertops.
How KRM fabricates marble
Eduardo, KRM’s countertop fabricator with 15 years in the trade, cuts marble in the shop’s own Houston facility. Marble chips at a cutout if it is rushed, so sink and cooktop openings get a slow cut and a polished inside edge. Bookmatched slabs are laid out on the shop floor so the vein lines up at the seam. The first coat of sealer goes on before handover.
Marble is one of the materials under countertop replacement in Houston, and a marble island inside a full kitchen remodel in Houston goes in during the last week of the 2 to 4 week build. Financing through Synchrony is available.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much do marble countertops cost in Houston?
Marble countertops run $50 to $200 per square foot installed, with an average near $100 (Fixr, January 2026). SlabWise (March 2026) lists Carrara at $75 to $120 installed, Statuario at $130 to $200 and Calacatta at $150 to $250 and up. A 40 square foot Houston kitchen in Carrara is usually $3,000 to $5,000 installed. These are market ranges, not a Kitchen Remodel Masters quote.
What is the difference between Carrara and Calacatta marble?
Both come from the Carrara region of Italy. Carrara is gray-white with fine, feathery gray veins and is the most common and cheapest marble. Calacatta is whiter with bold, wide veins in gray or gold, comes from smaller quarries, and costs two to three times more. Fixr (2026) lists Carrara material at $40 to $100 per square foot and Calacatta at $175 to $400.
Does marble etch?
Yes. Marble is calcium carbonate and reacts with acid. SlabWise (2026) reports lemon juice can etch in about 30 seconds, vinegar in 1 to 2 minutes, and wine or tomato sauce in 2 to 5 minutes. An etch is a dull, lighter spot on the surface, not a stain. Sealing slows staining but does not stop etching.
Should I choose honed or polished marble for a kitchen?
Honed for a kitchen counter. Honed is a matte finish that hides etch marks, since an etch on honed marble looks like more of the same matte. Polished shows every etch as a dull spot in the shine. Polished resists stains slightly better because the pores are tighter, so it works on a bathroom vanity or a low-use island.
How often does marble need sealing?
Kitchen marble should be resealed every 3 to 4 months, and bathroom marble every 6 to 12 months (SlabWise 2026). Fixr (2026) suggests once or twice a year as a minimum. Test it: if a drop of water darkens the stone within a few minutes, reseal. Sealing is a 20 minute job with a wipe-on penetrating sealer.
Does Houston humidity hurt marble?
No. Humidity does not etch or stain marble. The Houston issue is hard water. Tap water here leaves a white mineral film around the faucet, and the usual fix, vinegar or a lime remover, will etch the marble. Use a cleaner labeled safe for marble and dry the sink area after use.
What looks like marble but is easier to care for?
Three options. Quartz in a Calacatta pattern needs no sealing and never etches, at $50 to $150 per square foot installed (SlabWise 2026). Porcelain slabs print the marble look on a surface that shrugs off acid and heat, at $55 to $120 installed (Fixr 2025, SlabWise 2026). Quartzite such as Taj Mahal is real stone with marble-like veins and no etching, at $75 to $130 in Houston (Sugar Land Stone 2025).
Can a marble etch or stain be fixed?
Usually. Light etches on honed marble come out with a marble polishing powder. Deeper etches and water rings on polished marble need a professional re-polish, which SlabWise (2026) puts at $3 to $8 per square foot. Oil and wine stains lift with a poultice left on overnight. Kitchen Remodel Masters can re-polish a marble counter it installed.
