This two-story brick home in the Copperfield area of northwest Houston had a wide back patio with no shade. Kitchen Remodel Masters Houston built an attached patio cover across the full width of the slab, tied in above the back windows and carried on white posts at the edge, with a finished ceiling, recessed lights and ceiling fans.

What we built
- Attached solid-roof cover. Framed into the house so the roofline reads as part of the home, not an add-on, and finished white to match the existing trim and fascia. Compare the options in pergola vs patio cover in Houston.
- Ceiling, fans and lights. A finished flat ceiling with two ceiling fans and recessed lights, wired by our electrician on a permit.
- Existing slab kept. The concrete was in good shape, so the cover went over it as-is.
A cover like this is step one for most of the outdoor kitchens we build. Once the roof is up, an island, a TV and a fridge can follow. See patio covers, covered outdoor kitchens and what a covered patio costs in Houston.

Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of patio cover is this?
An attached cover with a solid roof, tied into the house above the back windows and carried on posts at the slab edge, finished white to match the trim. It has a flat ceiling with ceiling fans and recessed lights.
Was the slab replaced?
No. The cover was built over the existing concrete patio. If the slab is sound, keeping it saves money; if you want a bigger footprint, we pour the extension first and build the cover over both.
Do you need a permit for a patio cover in Houston?
An attached cover with electrical for fans and lights usually needs a City of Houston building permit and an electrical permit, which we pull as part of the project. Read our Houston permits guide for details.
How long does a patio cover take?
A cover like this takes about one to two weeks on site once the permit is approved, plus a day for the electrician to wire the fans and lights.
